Journal of American College

HOW IT'S MADE
I encourage my students to watch episodes of the science show “How It’s Made.” Textbooks often provide only basic linking words to show sequence, but to excel in understanding and explaining industrial processes, it’s crucial to be able to comment rather than just describe the steps. For example, here are some useful language chunks we gathered from watching just one episode:⬇️⬇️⬇️
◽️First, they head into a revolving drum, where under a shower of water the beets rub against each other, dislodging the soil.
◽️This gets their cell membranes to begin opening, clearing the way for the sucrose to exit during the next operation in which the cassettes are pumped to the bottom of a 22- yard-high extraction tower.
◽️This draws out the sucrose, producing a sugary water called raw juice.
◽️The thin juice then enters a six-step evaporation process which reduces it to a thick syrup-like juice.
◽️An experienced tea master directs every phase of the processing, the first step of which is called solar withering.
◽️Workers keep moving the leaves around to ensure a thorough exposure to the sun.
◽️ After unsealing each bin, the factory’s quality control technician scoops a sample for testing. This is to make sure that the thickness is just right.

The more I learn other languages, the more I love my own.
Our "professional" teacher back in 2019 used to say he had nearly forgotten his own language after he tried really hard to learn English. We naively believed that guy. Now I know this never happens.
Learning one language means discovering your new self in a different environment, not forgetting your own language entirely.

I hate teachers who idealize themselves and tell stories about their achievements.
Provide the fu**ing education, you arrogant bas**rds.
Having a certain degree of knowledge does not make teachers ideal people. There are more important things in life which are freaking hard to deal with.

Listening to random music hits differently.
When I want to listen to music and look for some 'nice' ones, I end up scrolling through a bunch of songs without listening to any.

DUNNING-KRUGER EFFECT
The Dunning–Kruger effect is a cognitive bias where individuals with low ability or knowledge in a particular area overestimate their own competence, while those with high ability tend to underestimate their competence.
I remember about this concept after every exam; students with poor performance on a test usually believe they performed well, whereas students who performed well believe they made several mistakes.
It is like your average football fan watching football, and saying wild things about what they would do if they were in the field.
Hafta davomida astoydil o'qib, deyarli har haftada mock testlarga qatnashib Multilevel (CEFR) dan o'zlari xohlagan ballarni olishga erishgan o'quvchilarimizni chin yurakdan tabriklayman!
Ko'pchiligi yil davomida deyarli har bir tashkil etilgan CEFR imtihonida qatnashib, natija ko'rsatishdi.
Men uchun 2023-2024-yilda Multilevel test yili bo'ldi desam ham bo'ladi.
Lekin baribir o'sha gapimda qolaman. IELTS imtihoni O'zbekistondagi eng ishonchli va adolatli test tizimi. Multilevel(CEFR) shunchaki arzon va narxiga yarasha baholash tizimi talabga javob bermaydi. Ko'p narsa "dehqoncha" usulda qilinadi.
Ha mayli. Vaqt kerak har bir narsaga.
The bar charts illustrate the proportion of men and women in a particular country in Asia who succeeded in the driving test over the period from 1980 to 2010.
Overall, it is readily apparent that the percentage of both male and female test takers passing the test rose over the period. What's more, more women than men successfully passed the exam in all given years.
As for women, the test pass rates stood at below 50% in 1980 and there was a slight growth of about 5% in one decade before the figure went up significantly and peaked at just below 70% in 2000. However, the rate declined minimally by around 5% by the end of the period.
When it comes to men, those who succeeded in the test accounted for about 28% in 1980 and there was a gradual rise in the number of successful test takers over the next 3 decades, reaching almost 50% after which the pass rates stayed unchanged at the same level until the end of the timeframe.

The way Multilevel (CEFR) test was organised just doesn't make any sense.

I want to sleep when I watch some videos where people talk at a nooooormal speed with a lot of pauses and try to explain obvious things in "great" detail.

Spanish is a beautiful language, isn't it?
Seems like I understand everything.
My fiancée knows Spanish. I'll let her explain this song to me better:)

Most stories and profile pictures are intended to show that how we feel about things.
By doing this, deliberately or unknowingly, we make others concerned about how we're feeling.

I'm not that mechanically inclined but I'm obsessed with breaking devices open and seeing what's inside.
I spent a better part of my childhood trying to find out how electronic devices, such as mp3 players and radios, work.
I have a full set of equipment to fix and change parts of any device you name it.
The line graph compares employment figures in three sectors in the USA from 1975 to 1982, as well as projections for the year 2025.
Overall, it is clear that agriculture followed a downward trend, changing from the largest employer to the least preferred occupation over time, while the reverse is true for services. According to predictions, these trajectories will maintain the same pattern in the future.
Regarding agriculture, it employed a staggering 80 million people in the USA in 1975, and there was no change in the number of workers until 1977. However, in the next two years, there was a dramatic reduction to around 43 million, followed by further declines from 1979 to 1982, reaching about 20 million. This figure is predicted to keep decreasing to just over 10 million by 2025.
As for the other two employment areas, manufacturing and services, they initially employed almost the same number of people, roughly 10 million each, in 1975. They then followed similar patterns over the next five years, each reaching 40 million. However, between 1980 and 1982, these sectors experienced opposite trends. Manufacturing saw a considerable reduction to approximately 18 million by 1982, with a predicted decline to 10 million by 2025. In stark contrast, services showed consistent and sharp growth, with projections indicating a staggering rise to 90 million by 2025.
