He said: This was mentioned to al-Ḥasan (al-Baṣrī) and he said: "The devil desires to win against you in this matter. So do not become lazy in asking for forgiveness." Perseverance is the key to every 'Ibādah. Know well that there is no shortcut to attaining sweetness and joy in your 'Ibādah. It requires showing Allāh تعالى how persistent you are in your path to attain His pleasure. Only if you give your 'Ibādah the time, effort and patience will its fruits be achieved. Sufyān ath-Thawrī said: "For twenty years I waged jihād against myself. I struggled all the time to remain in prayer at night. In those twenty years, I never tasted the sweetness of night prayer. Only after that did I find solace and sweetness." Abdullāh Ibn Mubārak said: "The souls of righteous people in the past urged them to do good deeds, but our souls do not do what we want them to do except by force. So we have to force them." [Hilyat al-Awliyā']

Then 'Abdulmalik ibn 'Umar ibn 'Abdul'azīz said while we were listening to the statement of Allāh: {But how could they attain from a place so far away (from the Hereafter) now} (Saba' 34:52)." Then he (Muḥammad?) asked him while we were listening and 'Umar replied: "You asked about attainment. It is repentance. They asked for it after they were no longer able to do so." [ibn abī ad-dunyā, at-taubah 1/118] Muḥammad ibn Ka'b had many companions who were among the wisest people in terms of exegesis (of the Qur'an). Once they gathered in the mosque (called) ar-Rabaḏah and (suddenly) an earthquake shook them. The mosque then collapsed on them and they all died under it (see adh-Dhahabī in as-Siyar).

The Prophet then mentioned this to his people and commanded them to come out among themselves with the nobles so that they might repent. Then (they listened and) came out and he commanded them to come out with the three most excellent among them as a sending to Allāh - or he said: - as a conception to Allāh. Then these three stood before the people and one of the three said, "O Allāh, You have commanded us in the Torah that You sent down upon Your servant Moses (Mūsā) that we should not refuse the supplication (of the supplicant) when they stand before our doors. And we are also one of those who ask You and stand at one of Your doors. So do not reject whoever asks You." Then the second said, "O Allāh, You have commanded us in the Torah that You sent down upon Your servant Moses that we should forgive the one who has wronged us. And we have wronged our souls, so forgive us." Then the third said, "O Allāh, You have commanded us in the Torah that You sent down upon Your servant Moses that we should release our servants. And we are Your servants and Your servants, so arrange for our release." Finally, Allāh revealed to the Prophet that He had accepted their repentance and forgiven them.
