Wa (和) is often translated as harmony, peace, and balance. It is a way of movement and mindset. It reveals itself in the ability to move in sync with the opponent, to use minimal force for maximum effect, and to remain calm, precise, and adaptable under pressure. Rather than clashing, one blends; rather than resisting, one adjusts; rather than forcing, one refines. True technique is not domination; it is integration.

Sanchin & Naihanchi (三戦 & 内歩進) Shito-ryu Karate combines the speed and precision of Shuri-te with the rooted power and close-range control of Naha-te. This blend creates a system with both long-range striking and short-range engagement. Kenwa Mabuni stressed that Sanchin and Naihanchi are not only forms but methods for building Karate skill. He emphasized exact stance, posture, breathing rhythm, hip use, and mental focus. Small errors in alignment, tension, or timing weaken the result. You must train both the internal elements such as breathing, core engagement, and mental intent, and the external elements such as proper stance, correct posture, foot position, and hand technique. This ensures the lessons of Sanchin and Naihanchi carry into many movement in Shito-ryu Karate. Consistent, focused practice of Sanchin and Naihanchi will build core skills that support many key techniques in your Karate.

The Proper Path of Mae Geri (Front Kick) In executing Mae Geri, correct form is essential for speed, control, and effectiveness. As soon as the kicking foot leaves the floor, the leg bends at the knee. From there, the hip joint lifts the thigh forward and upward (by engaging the hip flexors), bringing the knee onto the line of the intended target. When the knee reaches alignment with the target, the lower leg extends sharply from the knee joint, directing the foot straight to the target. Immediately after the technique, the leg retracts quickly from the knee. This is Hiki Ashi, which preserves balance, readiness, and proper posture. A proper Mae Geri is not just a kick, but a coordinated sequence of chamber, extension, and retraction performed with efficiency and intent.

This poem captures the essence of Kenwa Mabuni’s discipline and the joy of dedicated training in martial arts. It speaks of letting go of everyday distractions, focusing entirely on the practice, and embracing the journey of self-improvement. The imagery of paddling through an endless sea symbolizes the continuous effort required in martial training, not just to fight, but to refine the body, mind, and spirit. True fulfillment lies not in reaching a destination, but in the very act of moving forward. Discipline, persistence, and the joy of progress, this is the heart of the martial path.

Training under 'Taki 滝', Waterfall. Is a unique traditional method in Japanese karate where practitioners train under falling water to strengthen spirit, focus, and endurance. The force of the water teaches calmness under pressure, controlled breathing, and mental clarity, helping the karateka develop inner discipline as much as physical toughness.

(Uke) = receiving / blocking So the literal meaning is “swing-and-discard block” or “sweeping away block.” 🥋 In Bassai Dai, this movement appears near the end as a sharp sweeping action that removes and deflects the opponent’s kick strongly to the side while immediately creating space for the next movement.

Kakuyoku (鶴翼) In the White Crane Fist (Hakutsuru Ken or Hakkaku Ken) introduced by Master Go Kenki to the Okinawan masters, there is a movement inspired by the crane spreading its wings. This movement is called Kakuyoku (鶴翼), meaning “bird’s wings” or “crane’s wings.” There are three variations of this posture based on how wide the arms open: Sho Kakuyoku (小鶴翼), Chu Kakuyoku (中鶴翼) and Dai Kakuyoku (大鶴翼) (Small, middle and the Big one). Each form shows different levels of energy expression and body control. Together they illustrate the White Crane’s method of using softness, expansion, and contraction to create both defense and counterattack.

Hayasa (速さ - speed / quickness) is the direct Japanese word for speed, but in traditional karate, especially in the teaching of Kenwa Mabuni, speed is never understood as simple fast movement; it is speed with control, timing, and purpose. True Hayasa appears when unnecessary tension disappears. A relaxed body moves faster than a tense body. In karatedo, Hayasa (速さ) is not merely moving fast; it is the natural expression of correct timing, a relaxed body, and decisive action.

(Suburitō) A suburito is a type of wooden practice sword used in Japanese martial arts. Heavier than a standard bokken (wooden sword), it is designed to build strength and power while refining swordsmanship techniques. Training for karate demands not just precise technique but also strength and resilience. By combining Suburito practice with Macebell and Clubbell exercises, I’ve crafted a dynamic routine that develops power and endurance in my arms and shoulders. This synergy of traditional and modern tools not only enhances my physical capacity but also deepens my connection to the art of karate. It’s a journey of continuous growth, balancing strength with precision and tradition with innovation. #macebell #clubbell #suburito #素振り刀 #kendo #budo #karatedo #shitoryu #shitokai

Sonkei (尊敬) is a cornerstone philosophy in karate and all traditional Japanese martial arts. Respect is the heart of karate. Every bow, every lesson, every partner is a chance to honor others and the art itself. Sonkei means respect with honor, a deep acknowledgment of the value, skill, and dignity of others. It’s more than simple politeness; it’s a conscious attitude of reverence for teachers, fellow students, opponents, and the art itself. Sonkei is expressed in many ways: bowing at the dojo (Rei), acknowledging instructors and seniors, respecting training partners, honoring opponents in kumite, and more.

Rohai of Master Anko Itosu. Master Itosu Anko introduced the Rohai kata to the Shuri region and created a simplified structure by dividing it into three forms: Rohai Shodan, Rohai Nidan, and Rohai Sandan. Among these, Rohai Shodan is especially distinctive due to its signature stance, Sagi Ashi Dachi (heron stance), which emphasizes balance, precision, and stability on one leg. This unique use of Sagi Ashi Dachi sets Rohai Shodan apart, making it a defining characteristic of Itosu’s adaptation of the kata and a valuable training tool in Shuri-te tradition.

Doryoku (努力) is a fundamental principle in Japanese martial arts that means continuous effort, disciplined striving, and sincere hard work. It teaches that true progress does not come only from talent, but from steady daily practice, patience, repetition, and the willingness to continue even when improvement is slow. In martial arts, Doryoku is seen in repeating basics, refining kata, correcting mistakes, and maintaining discipline over a long period of time. It also includes mental effort, improving character, controlling emotions, and developing perseverance. Through Doryoku, a practitioner understands that real growth in both technique and spirit is built gradually through consistent and sincere effort.

These four kata are officially recognized as the Shitei Kata of Shitoryu, and their selection reflects a deliberate and highly structured pedagogical framework within the official Shitokai syllabus. Each kata has been chosen to represent one of the four principal technical traditions that collectively form the historical and technical foundation of Shitoryu: Shuri-te, Naha-te, Tomari-te, and Crane Fist. This classification clearly demonstrates the official emphasis placed by Shitoryu on preserving the diversity of its technical heritage through representative kata practice. As such, the study of these four kata is of fundamental importance for every practitioner, not only for technical refinement but also for developing a comprehensive understanding of their underlying principles, applications, and bunkai in complete detail. #kata #shiteigata #bassaidai #seienchin #matsumurarohai #nipaipo #shitokai #shitoryu #wskf #糸東流 #空手道 #空手
