Alexander the Great's Tomb...in Venice? In his books, The Lost Tomb of Alexander the Great and The Quest for the Tomb of Alexander the Great, Andrew Michael Chugg proposes a captivating hypothesis, suggesting that the remains of Alexander the Great actually reside in Venice. After his death in 323 BC, they were transported from Babylon to Alexandria, Egypt, by Ptolemy. Over time, the exact location of Alexander’s tomb was lost. Meanwhile, in the 1st century AD, Saint Mark’s body, mummified in Alexandria, became a significant Christian relic. Chugg theorizes that amid religious and political turmoil, the relics in Alexandria were swapped to protect Alexander’s remains. In 828 AD, Venetian merchants would have smuggled these relics, believed to be Saint Mark’s, to Venice. Evidence like a stone block resembling Macedonian symbols near Saint Mark’s tomb fuels Chugg’s theory. The author urges modern scientific analyses of Venice’s relics, to confirm whether Alexander's remains do indeed reside in Venice.
