| 7 | 📍 Dhatura and its Toxicity
• Commonly known as Indian thornapple/Devil's trumpet or Angel's trumpet.
• All parts of datura plants are poisonous but the seeds & fruits are considered to be the most noxious.
• The principal toxic elements are tropane alkaloids.
• Ingesting even a single leaf can lead to severe side effects.
• Hence for therapeutic purposes, it has to be purified.
⭕ Purification of datura
• Datura seeds are tied in a pottali.
• This pottali is boiled with cow milk in a dolayantra for three hours.
• Then pottali is opened and datura seeds are washed with hot water.
• These pure datura seeds are then used in the formulations.

• Unmadam
• Karnasoola
• Krimidanta
• Amavata
• Sthanasotha
• Pralapa
• Kateevyatha
• Sannipatha jwara
• Masurika

⭕ Therapeutic dose
• Purified Datura beeja choorna :¼ ratti to ½ ratti.
🔰If the therapeutic dose exceeds, it may result in toxicity symptoms.
⭕ Dhatura Visha Lakshna(Classical Reference)
• A person if poisoned by Dhatura, visual perceptions would all become yellowish
• Kampa (Tremors)
• Laala (Excessive Salivation)
• Mada (Intoxication)
• Chardi (Vomiting)
• Smruthibhramsha (Amnesia)
• Bhrama (Giddiness)
🔰 Toxicity Symptoms of Dhatura poisoning:9D’s
" Blind as a bat, hot as a hare, dry as a bone, red as a beef, and mad as a wet hen"
1. Dryness of mouth & throat
2. Difficulty in talking
3. Dysphagia
4. Dilatation of cutaneous blood vessels
5. Dilatation of pupils
6. Dry hot skin
7. Drunken gait
8. Delirium
9. Drowsiness
• Dryness of mouth & throat due to inhibition of saliva [dry as a bone]
• Difficulty in talking, dysphagia, thirst.
• Face get flushed due to dilatation of cutaneous blood vessels [red as a beef].
• Body temperature gets raised, and skin is dry & hot due to inhibition of sweat secretion &stimulation of the heat-regulating center [hot as a hare].
• Pulse becomes rapid.
• Respiration increased.
• Patient becomes confused,giddy, staggers as if drunk & later becomes delirious [mad as a wet hen]
💠 Fatal dose
•100-125Seeds/60mg for adults.
•4 mg for children of atropine.
💠 Fatal period: 24 hours
