Your Labour Is Not in Vain This verse comes at the end of Paul’s long chapter on the resurrection. That is not accidental. Because Christ has risen and we too will rise, nothing done for Him is wasted. The resurrection is the guarantee that our labour counts. Paul asks for three things: be steadfast, be immovable, and keep abounding in the Lord’s work. Steadfast means stable. Immovable means not easily shifted by pressure or discouragement. Abounding means not doing the bare minimum, but continuing generously. Much of what we do for the Lord goes unseen: prayers for children, visits to the sick, lessons prepared for a small Sunday school class. It may feel like nothing is happening. But labour “in the Lord” is never in vain. The resurrection makes sure of it. PRAYER Gracious Heavenly Father, thank You that because Christ is risen, nothing I do for You is wasted. In Due Season Paul knew that doing good can be tiring. Helping people who do not say thank you, serving in church week after week, and choosing honesty when others cut corners all wear us down. That is why he writes to encourage those who are tempted to give up doing good. The promise is tied to “due season.” Harvest does not come the week after planting. Any farmer knows the season between sowing and reaping can be long, and it is often when the fields look least promising that giving up feels most reasonable. But the harvest has its time. The condition is simple: “if we do not lose heart.” The reaping is certain; our part is to keep going. If you have been faithful in doing good and seen little result, do not stop now. Due season is coming. PRAYER Gracious Heavenly Father, You know how tired I am of doing good and seeing so little. Keep my heart from giving up. Help me trust that due season will come. I Will Strengthen You This verse is full of promises from God, stated one after another. “I am with you. I am your God. I will strengthen you. I will help you. I will uphold you.” Each one answers a different fear. Are you alone? Are you forgotten? Are you too weak? Are you going to fall? Fear often grows towards the end of the year. We fear the bills that come with December, the results of exams and reviews, and the uncertainty of the next year. God does not tell us that frightening things will not happen. He tells us that He will be with us in them. Read the verse slowly today and let each promise answer a specific fear. Name the fear, then speak the promise over it. The last lap of this year is not run in your own strength. You are held by the righteous right hand of God. PRAYER Gracious Heavenly Father, I bring You the fears I am carrying into the end of this year. Thank You that You are with me, that You will strengthen me, help me and uphold me. Strengthened in the Inner Man This is part of one of Paul’s great prayers for the church. It is worth noticing what he asks for. He does not pray for easier circumstances or for his readers’ problems to disappear. He prays for inner strength, supplied by the Holy Spirit, “according to the riches of His glory.” That measure matters. God does not give out of His riches, as a rich man might give a small gift. He gives according to His riches, in proportion to His wealth. The supply for your inner strength is as large as the glory of God. You can pray this prayer for yourself and for others. Think of someone who is struggling to finish this year well, and pray Ephesians 3:16 over them by name. Then pray it for yourself. The Spirit strengthens the inner man, and that strength shows in how we carry the outer load. PRAYER Gracious Heavenly Father, according to the riches of Your glory, strengthen me with might through Your Spirit in my inner being. Strengthen also those I love who are weary. The Joy of the Lord The people of Jerusalem had just rebuilt the city wall. Ezra read the Law to them, and as they listened they began to weep, grieved by how far they had fallen short. Nehemiah stopped them. This was a holy day, a day for celebration. Their strength would come not from sorrow but from joy. The phrase is “the joy of the LORD.” It is not joy in good circumstances, but joy that comes from God and joy in God Himself. That kind of joy is not shallow. It can sit alongside tears. But it lifts us, because it rests on who God is rather than on how we feel. Many people drag themselves to the end of the year weighed down by what they did not achieve. Repentance has its place, but do not stay there. Rejoice in the Lord: His forgiveness, His faithfulness and His presence. That joy will carry you further than guilt ever could. PRAYER Gracious Heavenly Father, where I have been carrying sorrow, lift my eyes to You. Fill me with Your joy, the joy that comes from knowing You. Let it be my strength for the rest of this year. Grace That Is Sufficient Paul prayed three times for his “thorn in the flesh” to be removed. We do not know exactly what it was, and perhaps that is deliberate, so that each of us can recognise our own. What we do know is that God said no. The thorn stayed. But with the no came a promise: “My grace is sufficient for you.” Sufficient grace is not always spectacular grace. It is enough grace, exactly enough for what you face. God’s strength is “made perfect in weakness”, meaning it is displayed most fully when our own strength is obviously not doing the work. There may be something you have prayed about all year that has not changed. God has not ignored you. He may be giving you something better than removal: His presence and power inside the difficulty. Sunday is a good day to rest in that. His grace is enough for today. PRAYER Gracious Heavenly Father, I have asked You many times about this burden. If You do not remove it, let Your grace be enough for me. Let the power of Christ rest on me in my weakness. Your grace is sufficient for me, and I will lean on it today. In Jesus’ name! Hallelujah! Renewed Day by Day Two processes run in parallel in every believer. The body ages; the spirit grows. Circumstances may take things from us; God keeps adding to us inwardly. We tend to measure our lives by the outward man. God measures them by the inward one. If this year has aged you, drained you or cost you, do not lose heart. Look at what God has been doing inside: patience learned, faith deepened, compassion enlarged. That inward renewal continues day by day, and it is the part of you that will last. PRAYER Gracious Heavenly Father, You see what this year has cost me outwardly. Thank You that You are renewing me inwardly day by day. Open my eyes to the growth You are working in me. Power to the Weak God’s power is not given to those who already have plenty. It is given “to the weak” and to “those who have no might.” This is the opposite of how the world works. The world rewards the strong. God strengthens the weak. That means weakness is not a barrier to receiving from God. It is actually the place where His help is most clearly seen. When we pretend to be strong, we stop asking. When we admit we have no might, we become candidates for His strength. Many people reach the last quarter of the year running on empty: parents stretched thin, workers facing year-end targets, students tired from long terms, ministers giving more than they have. If that is you, tell God honestly. He does not give power to the impressive. He gives it to the weak who come to Him. PRAYER Gracious Heavenly Father, I admit that I have no might of my own for what lies ahead. I come as I am, weak and in need. Give me Your power and increase my strength. Renewed Strength The verse just before this one admits something we all know: “Even the youths shall faint and be weary, And the young men shall utterly fall.” Natural strength runs out, even for the young and fit. Isaiah does not deny our limits. He points us to the One who has none. The promise is for “those who wait on the LORD.” Waiting here is not idle. It means looking to God, depending on Him and hoping in Him. As we do, He exchanges our worn-out strength for His. The result is described in three stages: soaring, running and walking. Sometimes we soar; more often we simply keep walking without fainting. The last lap of any race is where tiredness shows. If you are feeling it now, do not be ashamed. Wait on the Lord. Bring Him your exhaustion in prayer and let Him renew you. Walking without fainting is also a miracle of grace. PRAYER Gracious Heavenly Father, I come to You tired. My own strength is not enough for the last lap of this year. As I wait on You, renew my strength. Whether I soar, run or simply walk, keep me from fainting. New Every Morning This is how we keep pace over a long race. We do not have to store up enough grace in January to last until December. God gives fresh mercy for each day. Yesterday’s failures do not use up today’s supply. Each morning is a new portion. Tomorrow morning, before you pick up your phone, pause and receive the new mercy that has arrived with the day. Thank God that His compassions have not failed. The pace of this quarter is sustainable because His faithfulness is great, and it meets us one day at a time. PRAYER Gracious Heavenly Father, great is Your faithfulness! Thank You that Your mercies did not run out yesterday and will not run out today. Teach me to receive fresh grace each morning instead of living on stored-up strength. I will meet each day with Your new mercies. In Jesus’ name! Hallelujah! You Have Need of Endurance Endurance is the ability to keep doing the will of God when the feelings have faded and the promise has not yet arrived. Notice the order: first we do the will of God, then we receive the promise. There is often a gap between the two, and that gap is where endurance is formed. Perhaps you began 2026 with a clear sense of what God was asking of you. Now, in October, the energy has gone and the promise still seems far away. That is not a sign you were wrong. It is the point where endurance is needed. Keep doing what God asked, and the promise will come. PRAYER Gracious Heavenly Father, I confess that my strength fades when the promise is slow to arrive. Give me endurance to keep doing Your will when feelings are gone. I trust that the promise will come in Your time. I will not turn back; I will endure. In Jesus’ name! Hallelujah!
