| 2 | GES Releases 2026 Study Leave With Pay Eligibility Guidelines
The Ghana Education Service (GES) has released the official guidelines and eligibility criteria for its 2026 Study Leave With Pay programme.
According to an official memorandum dated July 20, 2026, applicants must meet the following key requirements to qualify:
Service Requirement: Standard applicants must have completed at least three years of satisfactory service and will be bonded upon completion of their studies. Staff serving in designated deprived areas become eligible after two years of satisfactory service.
Special Cases: Non-professional graduate teachers need one year of service to pursue a Postgraduate Diploma in Education (PGDE). Returning secondment staff must complete two years of service, while re-appointed staff must serve five years before becoming eligible.
Restrictions: Staff whose applications are denied in their first year of eligibility cannot reapply in their second year and must instead opt for Study Leave Without Pay. In addition, applicants must have at least two years of service remaining after completing their programme. Staff aged 55 years and above are not eligible to apply for courses lasting four years or more.
All applications are subject to good conduct, satisfactory performance, and the recommendation of the applicant's supervisor.

| 3 | GES Begins Nationwide Training Ahead of 2026 SHS School Selection Exercise
The Ghana Education Service (GES) has announced a nationwide training and sensitisation exercise to prepare education officials for the 2026 Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) school selection and placement process.
In a letter dated 6th July 2026 and signed by Prince C. Agyemang-Duah, Director of the Schools and Instructions Division (Secondary), on behalf of the Director-General, GES invited all Regional, Metro, Municipal and District Directors of Education to participate in the exercise.
According to the letter, the training will take place at the various Regional Education Offices from Wednesday, 15th July to Tuesday, 28th July, 2026. The programme aims to deepen participants' understanding of the 2026 school selection guidelines and placement procedures to ensure a smooth and transparent exercise nationwide.
GES also announced that 2026 BECE candidates will begin selecting their Senior High Schools from Monday, 20th July to Friday, 7th August, 2026.
Regional Directors have been directed to communicate the information to all Metro, Municipal and District Directors of Education within their jurisdictions and ensure their full participation in the training.

| 9 | GES Directs Regions to Identify Overstaffed Schools and Excess Teachers
The Ghana Education Service (GES) has instructed all Regional Directors of Education to begin the identification and declaration of overstaffed schools and excess teachers across public basic and second-cycle institutions.
In a circular dated 8th July 2026 and signed by the Director-General, Prof. Ernest Kofi Davis, GES said the exercise forms part of efforts to ensure the equitable distribution of teaching staff nationwide.
Regional Directors have been directed to work with Metro, Municipal and District Directors to identify schools with surplus teaching staff and submit details of affected teachers, including their names, staff identification numbers, subject specializations, and other required information using an attached template.
According to the directive, all completed reports must be submitted through the respective Regional Directors to the Office of the Director-General by Thursday, 23rd July 2026.
The GES noted that the exercise is aimed at improving the deployment of teachers to address staffing imbalances and enhance the effective delivery of education across the country. | 244 |

| 11 | 📢 2026 BECE Candidates: School Selection Has Officially Begun!
The Ghana Education Service (GES) and TVET Service have released the 2026 CSSPS School Selection Form for BECE candidates.
Before selecting your schools, take note of these important guidelines:
✅ Select 8 schools in total:
6 Main Choices
2 Alternative Choices
✅ Your 1st choice should be the school you most want to attend.
✅ For the six main choices, select:
3 Boarding Schools
3 Day Schools
✅ Candidates must include:
One Day and One Boarding school from Category B
One Day and One Boarding school from Category C
⚠️ Important reminders:
You cannot choose more than 2 Category A schools.
You cannot choose more than 2 Category B schools.
Once submitted, your choices cannot be changed.
Alternative choices will only be considered if you are not placed in any of your six main choices.
🎓 Students interested in Engineering, Medicine, Physical Sciences, Aviation, Astronomy, and related fields are encouraged to select STEM/Science programmes where applicable.
👨👩👧👦 Parents and guardians are advised to actively participate in the selection process, as the form requires their consent before submission.

| 19 | GES Bans Flamboyant Post-Examination Celebrations on School Premises
Accra, June 19, 2026 – The Ghana Education Service (GES) has announced an immediate ban on extravagant post-examination celebrations on school campuses, citing concerns over growing displays of wealth during students' completion ceremonies.
In a statement issued by the GES Public Relations Unit on June 19, 2026, the Service expressed concern about an emerging trend in which parents and guardians present expensive gifts, including motor vehicles and money bouquets, to students on school premises after completing Senior High School.
According to GES, while it supports parents celebrating the achievements of their children, it strongly opposes ostentatious displays that take place within school compounds.
The directive specifically prohibits post-examination celebrations characterized by lavish presentations of gifts such as vehicles to students on school grounds. GES stated that the measure is intended to prevent the practice from becoming entrenched in the country's educational culture.
The Service further warned that heads of schools who permit such celebrations on their campuses will face sanctions.
GES explained that schools are meant to serve as social equalizers where merit, hard work, and academic achievement are valued above economic status. The statement noted that public displays of wealth during school celebrations can create visible socio-economic divisions among students, shift attention away from academic accomplishments, and cause psychological distress to students whose families may not be able to afford similar gestures.
Management of the Ghana Education Service has therefore appealed to parents, guardians, and other stakeholders to cooperate with the new directive in the interest of maintaining an inclusive and supportive educational environment.
