🤖 The PolarBear - Open-Source 3D-Printable Multipurpose CNC Machine Computer numerical control (CNC) is a method for automating control of machine tools through the use of software embedded in a microcomputer attached to the tool. Nice project of a useful desktop machine that can be used in many ways, from soldering to 3D-printing, depending on the task, tool, and a program. Thanks to the PolarBear's unique design and kinematics, the limits between the needs of the different functions are more blurred. While it can be as fast as a 3D printer, it can be rigid for use as a CNC milling machine as well. The machine can be build of available off-the-shelf components and has 3D-printable parts. 💻 Practical PCB Layout Tips This article will help your PCB projects work correctly and reliably. ▫️ Sizing Traces: Real-world copper traces have resistance, thus trace has a voltage drop, power dissipation, and a temperature rise when current flows through it. Use a PCB trace width calculator to determine how thick and wide your traces should be for your application. ▫️ Make Loops Small: Small loops also help reduce the amount of signals that are inductively coupled into the node from external sources, or are broadcast from the node. This is what you want, unless you’re designing an antenna. Also keep loops small for op-amp circuits to prevent noise from being coupled into the circuit. ▫️ Place decoupling capacitors as near as possible to the power and ground pins of integrated circuits to maximize decoupling efficiency. ▫️ Place extra copper around surface mount component to provide extra surface area to dissipate heat more efficiently. 📟 The Index - PnP machine for automatic circuit boards assembly The Index an open-source pick and place (PnP) machine. The project is under development. The goal of the Index is to help folks bridge the gap between prototyping and mass production. The Index is designed to be low-cost enough that someone could buy or build one to support making production runs at home or as a small business. It runs using OpenPnP. The Index will eventually be able to do multiple parts of the PCBA manufacturing process. It is currently capable of picking parts and placing them, but eventually the Index will support solder paste dispensing and interfacing with other machines, such as a PCB panel hopper and reflow oven. 📰 The shortage of MCUs MCUs are widely used in a multitude of systems, such as appliances, cars, communication equipment, and industrial products. Demand is robust for MCUs. “MCU is an example of a hot application, where the support is needed from mature 200mm technology nodes through mainstream 300mm technologies,” UMC’s Ng said. “MCUs are one of the key applications driving the growth of mainstream 40nm and below technologies.” MCU suppliers, however, can’t keep up with demand. “Shortages of MCUs continue,” Semico’s Feldhan said. “Demand for MCUs started to increase towards the second half of 2020. Since then, MCU average selling prices (ASPs) have increased each quarter. The supply does seem to be tightest for 32-bit MCUs where ASPs have increased over 20% over the last year.” Some MCU suppliers are taking usual steps to meet demand. Microchip, for one, launched a Preferred Supply Program (PSP). More information... #news
