📍Zambezi River ✅The Zambezi is the fourth longest river in Africa, after the Nile, Congo, and Niger Rivers. It is the longest east flowing river in Africa. ✅It flows through six countries on its journey from its source in north-western Zambia to the Indian Ocean, an amazing 2 700 km. ✅The Power of the Zambezi River has been harnessed along its journey at two points, the first being Kariba Dam in Zimbabwe and the second Cahora Bassa Dam in Mozambique. ✅Both these dams are sources of hydroelectric power and supply a large portion of power to Zambia, Zimbabwe and South Africa. ✅The Victoria Falls are considered the boundary between the upper and middle Zambezi. #prelims #Places_in_news Join @Mapping_prelims_mains

♦️Kaladan project ✅ The Kaladan project connects SITTWE PORT in Myanmar to the India-Myanmar border. ✅ The project was jointly initiated by India and Myanmar to create a multi-modal platform for cargo shipments from the eastern ports to Myanmar and to the North-eastern parts of the country through Myanmar. ✅ Significance: It is expected to open up sea routes and promote economic development in the North-eastern states, and also add value to the economic, commercial and strategic ties between India and Myanmar. ✅ This project will reduce distance from Kolkata to Sittwe by approximately 1328 km and will reduce the need to transport good through the narrow Siliguri corridor, also known as Chicken’s Neck. ✅ Sittwe is the capital of Rakhine State (which has been in the news for the plight of Rohingya Muslims) in south-western Myanmar. It is located at the mouth of the KALADAN RIVER, which flows into Mizoram in north-eastern India. #IR #Geography Join @UPSC_MAP

🔆What is Mass Wasting? ✅A new study on the high frequency of mass wasting events in the Sedongpu Gully of the Tibetan Plateau since 2017 and the rapid warming of the area, could be bad signs for India, specifically the country’s Northeast. ✅Mass Wasting: It is the movement of rock and soil down slope under the influence of gravity.  📍Causes: ✅It occurs when a slope is too steep to remain stable with existing material and conditions.   ✅Slope stability is determined by two factors: the angle of the slope and the shear strength of the accumulated materials. ✅Mass-wasting events are triggered by changes that oversteepened slope angles and weaken slope stability, such as rapid snow melt, intense rainfall, earthquake shaking, volcanic eruptions, storm waves, stream erosion, and human activities. ✅Excessive precipitation is the most common trigger. ✅Mass-wasting events are classified by their type of movement and material, and they share common morphological surface features. ✅The most common types of mass-wasting events are rockfalls, slides, flows, and creep. ✅Geologically, landslide is a general term for mass wasting that involves fast-moving geologic material. ✅Loose material along with overlying soilsare what typically move during a mass-wasting event. ✅Moving blocks of bedrockare called rock topples, rock slides, or rock falls, depending on the dominant motion of the blocks.  ✅Movements of dominantly liquid material are called flows. ✅Movement by mass wasting can be slow or rapid.Rapid movement can be dangeroussuch as during debris flows. #gs1 #geography

🔆Sedongpu glacier: ✅The Sedongpu Gully, in the catchment of the Sedongpu glacier and its valley, is 11 km long and covers 66.8 sq. km. ✅It drains into the Yarlung Zangbo, or the Tsangpo River, near where it takes a sharp turn- called the Great Bend– while flowing around Mt. Namcha Barwa (altitude 7,782 metres) and Mt. Gyala Peri (7,294 metres) to create a gorge 505 km long and 6,009 metres deep. ✅This is one of the deepest gorges on the earth. The Great Bend is close to Tibet’s border with Arunachal Pradesh, where the Tsangpo flows as the Siang River. ✅In Assam further downstream, the Siang meets the Dibang and Lohit to form the Brahmaputra, which flows as the Jamuna in Bangladesh. #gs1 #prelims #geography

🔆Frequent mass wasting in Tibet a cause of worry for India ✅Mass wasting has increased in the Sedongpu Gully, Tibetan Plateau, since 2017 due to rapid warming. ✅A geological event, mass wasting is the gravity-influenced movement of rock and soil down a slope. A gully is a landform created by erosion from running water, mass movement or both. 📍Mass Wasting:Mass wasting, or mass movement, involves the movement of rock or soil down slopes under the force of gravity. ✅It differs from other erosion processes as the debris is not transported by a moving medium like water, wind, or ice. ✅Types of mass wasting include creep, solifluction, rockfalls, debris flows, and landslides, each with unique characteristics and varying timescales, from seconds to hundreds of years. ✅This process occurs on terrestrial and submarine slopes and has been observed on Earth and other bodies in the Solar System, including Mars, Venus, and Jupiter’s moon Io. #geography

🔆Waterspouts Recently, a luxury yacht sank off Sicily, Italy, during a violent storm, resulting in one confirmed death and six individuals missing, possibly due to a waterspout. 📍 Waterspouts: ✅Waterspouts are significant atmospheric phenomena characterised by rotating columns of air that form over water bodies. These tornado-like structures typically develop overseas or in large lakes, presenting a spectacular display of nature's power. ✅It is a weaker version of a tornado, typically lasting 5-10 minutes. ✅The average diameter is around 165 feet (50 meters). Wind speeds can reach up to 100 km/h (60 mph). 📍Formation of Waterspouts: The formation of a waterspout varies depending on its type: ✅Fair-weather waterspouts occur when cool air flows over open water, pulling water upwards and creating the waterspout. ✅Tornadic waterspouts are more likely to form during thunderstorms. Some may even start as tornadoes on land and then move over water. These waterspouts typically develop in the sky and extend downward. Waterspouts evolve through a distinct five-stage process:Dark spot: A light-coloured disk becomes visible on the water’s surface, surrounded by a darker area with blurred edges. ✅Spiral pattern: Bands of light and dark colours spiral outward from the dark spot. ✅Spray ring: The dark spot creates a swirling mass of sea spray, resembling the eye of a hurricane. ✅Mature vortex: The spray ring forms a spinning funnel that stretches from the water’s surface to the clouds above. ✅Decay: As warm air disrupts the vortex, the waterspout weakens and dissipates. ✅The key to waterspout formation is the presence of cold air cycling over warm water. When these conditions align, a waterspout can develop. ✅While most common in tropical and subtropical regions, waterspouts can occur in various parts of the world, including Europe, the Middle East, and even Antarctica. #geography
