Ilse Hirsch, War Maiden of Aachen Born in 1922, Hirsch joined the Bund Deutscher Mädel (League of German Girls), and achieved the rank of Hauptgruppenführerin (Captain). She is famous as part of the six-person team that participated in Unternehmen Karneval (Operation Carnival) in 1945, to assassinate Dr. Franz Oppenhoff, who had been appointed as mayor of Aachen after the Allies captured the city, and who was a traitor to NS Germany. Hirsch was selected to take part, because she knew Aachen well, and acted as a guide for the team. After the war Ilse Hirsch continued to live in the Aachen area, marrying and having children. Christina In Red, 1913 (2 of 2) They were taken using a process known as Autochrome, which debuted in 1907. It was invented by the Lumière brothers, and was the earliest widely available color photography technique before film caught up in the 1930s. The photographer is Mervyn O'Gorman, a famed British engineer. The girl is believed to be his daughter Christina, captured on a day at the beach in Lulworth Cove, southern England.
