Common causes include: ~Freight is not ready as scheduled. ~Pickup or delivery is moved to the next day. ~The facility closes or cancels the appointment. ~Load requirements change and the driver must remain available. Layover compensation is not automatically established by federal law. Its amount and eligibility depend on the rate confirmation, carrier-broker agreement or customer policy. 🔎 Keep these terms separate: Detention — usually hourly waiting beyond a facility’s free time. Layover — a longer interruption, often lasting overnight or until the next day. TONU — the truck was ordered but the load was canceled and the truck was not used. 📍 Practical example: A driver arrives on time for a Tuesday 2:00 p.m. pickup, but the freight will not be ready until Wednesday at 9:00 a.m. Dispatch sends the arrival time to the broker, obtains written approval for a $250 layover, and requests a revised rate confirmation.
