At a cost of $1.5B and the size of a school bus, the Hubble Space telescope was launched in 1990.

Planet Earth is about the same size as planet Venus.

There are over 100 billion galaxies in the universe.

The first person to prove that comets travel in orbits was astronomer Edmond Halley. Halley's comet is named after Edmond Halley. It was Halley who saw the comet in 1682 and predicted correctly that it would appear again. Unfortunately Edmond Halley had died about fifteen years prior to its return.

The nearest star to the Earth is 4.22 light years away. It is called Proxima Centauri.

Halley predicted that a comet he had discovered would return in 1758, 16 years after his death, and it really did. It was the first time a comet's arrival had been predicted, and the comet was named after him as Halley's Comet.

What is the coldest known location in our Solar System? Until recently, Pluto had the distinction of being both the outermost planet and coldest known place. Now it’s neither, having been demoted from planet status in 2006 and last September (2009) losing its frosty reputation to somewhere much closer to home: the Moon. NASA’s Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter recorded a temperature of -240°C inside a crater at the Moon’s south pole, where the Sun has never shone. That’s 20°C colder than the surface of Pluto.

Venus and Uranus are the only planets that rotate clockwise (retrograde rotation.)

As of today there are a reported more than 3600 known comets.

Mercury and Venus don't have any moons

The red color of Mars is due to oxidized (rusted) iron in its soil.

The Andromeda Galaxy is thought to be less massive compared to our galaxy because it is believed that our galaxy has more dark matter.

Earth is the fifth largest planet in our solar system.

Just half a billionth of the energy released by the sun reaches the Earth

Jupiter is heavier than all the other planets put together.

Sunday, July 20, 1969: Neil Armstrong was the first man to walk on the moon, Edwin Aldrin was the second. They were members of Apollo 11, and landed in the Sea of Tranquility. The Lunar Excursion Module was named the "Eagle." Michael Collins stayed onboard the mother ship, "Columbia."

The Hubble telescope already has its successor, the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST), that should be launched in 2018.

Jupiter's magnetosphere is the largest and most powerful of any planetary magnetosphere in the Solar System, and by volume the largest known continuous structure in the Solar System after the heliosphere. It stretches from Jupiter's poles to Saturn

Some brown dwarfs have liquid iron rain falling down on them.

Mercury can get as hot as 800 degrees and can be as cold as 300 degrees below zero.
