Oil plunges 7.5% as Trump holds off on Iran escalation S&P 500: 7,413.18 (0.0%) Nasdaq-100: 28,039.21 (-0.3%) DJIA: 52,210.08 (+0.5%) Eurostoxx: 6,282.21 (0.0%) U.S. crude futures: $82.61 (-7.5%) Wall Street ended mixed Monday as easing U.S.-Iran tensions collided with fresh doubts over AI valuations. President Trump held off on escalating military action against Iran, reportedly citing Pentagon concerns over munitions stockpiles (WSJ, 28 July). The de-escalation triggered a sharp reversal in oil: US crude futures plunged $6.70 (7.5%) to $82.61 a barrel, unwinding last week's spike tied to clashes near the Strait of Hormuz and Red Sea, when WTI had closed above $92 on Thursday (WSJ, 28 July). The energy shock continued to dominate bond and equity market attention into Monday's session.

Markets await Big Tech verdict as chipmakers and oil take centre stage S&P 500: 7,411.98 (+0.1%) Nasdaq-100: 28,128.34 (-1.2%) DJIA: 51,947.25 (+0.5%) Eurostoxx: 6,280.94 (+1.1%) U.S. crude futures: $89.31 (-3.1%) U.S. equities closed mixed on Friday, with investors balancing rising geopolitical risks against corporate earnings expectations. Technology was the weakest sector, with chipmakers leading declines. The Philadelphia Semiconductor Index dropped 4.5%, while Intel fell 7.9%, despite issuing better-than-expected revenue and profit guidance. Investor sentiment toward the AI theme softened following Alphabet’s announcement of a significant increase in spending, raising questions over whether large investments are translating into sustainable earnings growth (Stockwits, 25 July). Markets are now focused on a pivotal week ahead, with earnings due from Microsoft, Meta, Amazon and Apple. Geopolitical developments remained a key market driver. Oil prices recovered from session lows after reports that China is pushing for renewed U.S.-Iran peace talks via Pakistan. However, crude remains elevated ahead of this week’s Federal Reserve meeting, reflecting ongoing Middle East tensions. Meanwhile, recent U.S. tariffs on imports from 60 trading partners added another layer of uncertainty (Reuters, 25 July). On the macro front, U.S. services activity accelerated in July, while manufacturing growth slowed to its weakest pace since March (Reuters, 25 July).

US stocks slide as Iran tensions and $100 oil fuel inflation fears S&P 500: 7,408.30 (-1.2%) Nasdaq-100: 28,454.81 (-1.9%) DJIA: 51,711.65 (-1.0%) Eurostoxx: 6,210.17 (-1.7%) U.S. crude futures: $92.19 (+6.7%) US stocks fell sharply on Thursday as geopolitical tension between the US and Iran showed no sign of easing. The S&P 500 dropped 1.2%, the Nasdaq-100 fell 1.9%, and the Dow Jones lost 1%. Alphabet was the standout decliner, shedding 6.7% after its capital expenditure plans reignited investor concerns about whether AI demand is sufficient to justify the hyperscale spending, despite reported better-than-expected revenue for the second quarter on Wednesday (CNBC, 23 July). Brent crude crossed $100 a barrel, stoking inflation fears and pushing Treasury yields to their highest levels for the year. President Trump warned he would hold Iran accountable for Houthi attacks in the Red Sea, threatening further military escalation (Reuters, 23 July).
