Gorge near Pians, 1921 Anita Rée (German, 1885 - 1933) "Like prism-like broken crystals, the rugged mountain flanks tower in two diagonals on either side of a ravine. Their blue-violet coloring contrasts with the orange streaks of the rising or setting sun. The painting Ravine near Pians was created during Anita Rée's trip to South Tyrol in the early summer of 1921. Here she finally wanted to get around to "landscape painting." Rée's main interest was in the various formations of the rock: from small, geometric elements that she placed against one another, she modeled and constructed the rock structures, whose edges and projections are reinforced by dark blue contour lines. The delicate, watercolor-like application of color and the finely differentiated color spectrum concentrated on blue make the rock shine and at the same time create a strong depth effect. Anita Rée's color modeling and form resolution show her idea of landscape painting of those years, which was trained by Cézanne.
