War Day 800 Days of the Big War: Folklore of Good vs Evil Becomes Real Life How War Can Fix Your Brain, part 234 CARPATHIAN MOUNTAINS, UKRAINE—It's Good Friday in Ukraine, and i share stories of how, raised on folktales and facing tyranny through the ages, Ukrainians have kept their traditions. And maybe all that experience--resistance and storytelling--has prepared them for hte battle between good and evil happening now. The Ukrainian word for victory means "overcoming might," that is, your limitations and ability. The Russian words for victory means something like, "after the sh**." And as a Ukrainian told me here in the mountains, if every person here can overcoming their limitations, victory will happen. Nope, I said, but today I recommend a British show that I often have on the background in the war, especially during bombings: The Detectorists, about people figuring out life while searching for buried treasure in pastoral England. And I also speak about the British adventurer and writer Patrick Leigh Fermor, who wrote about his account in the 1930s walking across Europe, including in these Carpathian mountains, as the shadow of tyranny lengthened. The first book of that trilogy is A Time of Gifts. Did you know King Charles also has his hidden hideout in the Carpathians?
