Word order in English - Subject Verb Object
📅 Day 23 | Part 19/20 | @YWTutorial

ዛሬ ሁለት ሰዎች ሲነጋገሩ ደንቡ ስንት ጊዜ ሊቀርብ ይችላል?
ለምን?: ይህን ደንብ ማወቅ ትክክለኛ አረፍተ ነገር ለመስራት ይረዳናል።
━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━
In English, when we want to say something happened to someone or something, we need to put the person or thing first, then what they did, and finally who or what was affected.
For example, "The boy threw the ball." Here, "the boy" is the one doing the action, "threw" is the action itself, and "the ball" is what got thrown.
EXAMPLES:
EXAMPLE 1: The teacher gave a book to Abebe.
EXAMPLE 2: My friend Blen ate an apple.
EXAMPLE 3: Dawit's mother bought him a toy.
Q&A:
Q1: What is the order of elements in an English sentence when describing what happened to someone or something?
ANSWER: Subject Verb Object.
Q2: If we want to say that a teacher dropped a book, how should we arrange the words in our sentence?

In English, we always put the subject first, followed by the verb, and then the object. For example: "The teacher gives a book to the student."
EXAMPLES:
Here are four complex sentences using the grammar target Subject Verb Object with the subordinating conjunctions because, although, when, and if:
1. The teacher gives a book to the student because she wants to help him learn.
Note: The subordinate clause "because she wants to help him learn" is in the correct order, following the main clause.
2. Although I have many books, I don't read them all when I'm at home.
Note: The subordinate clause "when I'm at home" follows the main clause with a change in subject (I) and verb (read), demonstrating an understanding of word order.
3. If it rains tomorrow, we will not go to the park because the playground is muddy.
Note: The subordinate clauses "if it rains tomorrow" and "because the playground is muddy" are correctly placed after their respective main clauses.
4. The student doesn't understand the lesson although the teacher explains it clearly when he writes on the board.
Note: The subordinate clause "when he writes on the board" follows the main clause with a change in subject (the teacher) and verb (explains), demonstrating an understanding of word order.
Q&A:
What is the correct order of words in an English sentence?
In a sentence, what position should the object take after the subject and verb?

EXAMPLES:

EXAMPLE 2: Blen eats an apple.
EXAMPLE 3: Dawit writes a letter.
Q&A:
Q1: Why do we say "The dog bites the man" and not "The man bites the dog"?
ANSWER: Because in English, the word order is always Subject Verb Object.
Q2: What is the role of "the man" in the sentence "The dog bites the man"?
ANSWER: The man is the Object because it gets affected by the action.

Abebe was playing outside with his sister Blen when their teacher, Mrs. Yeshi, called them inside. "The children are hungry," she said, "Blen is eating a sandwich." Abebe wanted to eat one too, but there were no more sandwiches left. He asked Blen if he could have some of hers, and she agreed, saying "Abebe is sharing his toy with me yesterday." Mrs. Yeshi smiled and said, "That's very kind of you both. Now let's go inside and find something to eat for everyone."
Mrs. Yeshi made a big pot of injera and some vegetables, and "Blen and Abebe are eating together now." Abebe was happy that he didn't have to go hungry after all.

📘 Concept
Word order in English - Subject Verb Object
📅 Day 23 | Part 1/20 | @YWTutorial
━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━
ዛሬ ለመጀመሪያ ጊዜ ይህን ትምህርት እንጀምራለን።
ለምን?: ይህን ደንብ ማወቅ ትክክለኛ አረፍተ ነገር ለመስራት ይረዳናል።
━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━
WHY:
In English, the word order Subject Verb Object (SVO) is essential for clear communication. Without it, sentences would be confusing and difficult to understand.
Subject refers to the person or thing performing an action, such as Abebe in "Abebe eats a sandwich." Verb means the action being performed, like "eats" in the sentence above. Object indicates what receives the action, which is "a sandwich" in this case.
If we changed the word order, it would be hard to know who or what is doing what. For example, "A sandwich eats Abebe" doesn't make sense because a sandwich can't perform an action on someone.
When students learn and follow the SVO rule, they will be able to express themselves more effectively in English.
EXAMPLES:
EXAMPLE 1: Abebe eats an apple.
EXAMPLE 2: Blen reads a book.
EXAMPLE 3: Dawit writes a letter.
Q&A:
Q1: What would happen to a sentence if it didn't follow the Subject Verb Object word order?
ANSWER: The sentence would be confusing and difficult to understand.
Q2: In an English sentence, what is meant by "the person or thing performing an action"?
ANSWER: This refers to the subject.
