"What is a home, if not the first place that teaches you to leave?", said a tumblr post I read a few days ago. It is a fairly appropriate assessment of what the homes that we are born into mean not just the physical building, but the familiarity of it, with its people, it's ideas, its history. Many of us, if not most, want to leave our homes even when they are incredibly comfortable. Homes are the places that teach you that even comfort can be suffocating.
Having said that, there's a little bit that I would like to add to the original tumblr post. Homes are the places that teach you to leave, yes. But homes are also the places that teach you to yearn. What is a home, after all, if not a craving to be understood? And so leaving it becomes such a divided act - you are so desperate to have a life that is yours, you are also so terrified to have a life that is not shared by those who you have grown up around. You are craving escape, you are terrified of it. You are craving newness, but familiarity is so gentle and tender. You leave behind what you needed to. You find a new city, a new apartment, a new life.
And then you wake up in the middle of the night, because this new bed, this new bed that you chose and bought and made-this new bed does not let you sleep the same. And you ask yourself, is that a good thing or a bad thing?
| 2 | That is what the New Year is all about: getting another chance – a chance to forgive, to do better, to do more, to give more, to love more, and to stop worrying about 'what if...' and start embracing what will be.
Happy New Year fellow existentialists! 🎊 | 768 |
| 3 | "Just as we look back in horror at the lives of people five hundred years ago, I imagine people five hundred years from now will laugh at us and our certainties today. They will laugh at how we let our money and our jobs define our lives. They will laugh at how we were afraid to show appreciation for those who matter to us most, yet heaped praise on public figures who didn’t deserve anything. They will laugh at our rituals and superstitions, our worries and our wars; they will gawk at our cruelty. They will study our art and argue over our history. They will understand truths about us of which none of us are yet aware.
And they, too, will be wrong. Just less wrong than we were."

| 11 | Most of us are inherently romanticists than realists. We rather prefer to boil our blood than let our hearts break, so we carry anger around as a constant companion, a badge of honor, which is nothing more than an old trick of the book; a veil against vulnerability.
Deep down we know how it ends. We are well familiar with the next chapter; the aftermath, the depth of it; anger subsides grief sinks in. And the realization that no matter how many boats we built then, we will never be able to float by. | 663 |

| 14 | In pop culture too, the concept of sadness has eluded storytellers. Most films would rather paint a black painting around sadness. But there are some instances like Rockstar, Synecdoche NY, BoJack Horseman where it is explored rather intricately, the way it is meant to. The whole concept of art being born out of pain has its foundations in the integrity of sadness. Kaufman's latest offering "I'm Thinking of Ending Things" is another such example where bottled up emotions are explored to their very roots.
These works don't speak about sadness like some word you learn from your dusty old-school dictionary. But they treat it as a concept, like having these emotions is as normal as the will to be happy. Not everyone actually goes down that spiritual path to beat it but some decide to delve in it, thrive in it until they learn to live with it as their most intimate possession. Like it's the only thing that makes sense to them and they denounce the world for the sake of it, sometimes even by choice, because they know at least this emotion is safe with them from the world's apathetic schemes. Only then the world loses all its power and control over them and they're finally free from its rotten stains and blemishes.

| 15 | A masochist is someone who derives pleasure out of one's pain or suffering. But what kind of a psychopath would believe in such a thing? Does it means one needs a heightened intellect or he arrives at the extreme spectrum of finding the spiritual and philosophical meaning in life, only to find there isn't any. Sure as they say, one who increaseth knowledge, increaseth pain. But what if sadness or grief or the satisfaction that follows later has nothing to do with any of it. What if sadness becomes the only true emotion that one finds his very own, that cannot be marred by someone else, and for once he can rely on the feeling being true. Because almost everything he's ever faced in life was either fabricated, or turned out to be nothing but a mere illusion.
Sure the euphoria of emotions can be ethereal. But almost everytime it becomes a lie. Happiness can be temporary, and sometimes a mere manifestation of a lie projected by a fraud. Almost everytime the emotions attached with thrills are short-lived. And we all know how emotions like fear and anger work for us. But sadness, I believe, stays with us the longest and is probably the most honest and real. It takes a real magician to fake sadness, internally. Sadness stays with you and the more you confront it the better it gets and eventually ends up making you wiser than before, ready to take on the world and its disappointments with courage. Sadness not always means a bleak canvas of depressive thoughts. Sometimes, it can be beautiful.

| 18 | December 20, 2016.
Wistfulness tinged with nostalgia; that was the sentiment I experienced upon recalling that late evening screening of La La Land with you 6 years ago. It appears so distant in memory, though it has remained etched in my mind's eye as if it were only yesterday. Then again, we all know that past failings can bear a crushing weight over time and amplify the memories of yesteryear until they acquire such poignancy that it renders the sufferer susceptible to moments of crippling retrospection.
That fateful night casts me back toward the hazy twilight before we plunged into uncertainty, back when we felt solid enough to outlast the twinkling stars above us. The innocence of youth hadn't yet tattered away from our untroubled hearts, and our affection still resonated with boldness and verve. We still believed that even something as ephemeral as this could become something for eternity.
Perhaps no other emblem was quite so suited to capturing our nascent tale as a timeless Hollywood classic like La La Land. We embraced the film score’s saccharine cadences with ferocious enthusiasm, reveling in its enticingly gauzy romance beneath the regal glow from atop Griffith Observatory – even if neither of us had any clue what we were looking at or why we even went there on that solemn night. It was just one of those moments you share together because you know it will linger forever in your heart; yet, like most unremitting affections, ours had expired somewhere along an ethereal chronology that could never be recovered no matter how desperate I've been searching for it since.
When viewed through the lens of recollection it appears all too brief, however at that moment in time, it seemed infinitely everlasting and ardently unaltered by all worldly matters. The fruition of romance, aspiring beyond a universe bound by physicality or rationality but transcending into one founded on emotion - however toxic - was wholly palpable for both of us.
As time continues its ceaseless march onward, often I remain transfixed by musings of what could have otherwise come to pass if different paths were forged or stronger foundations laid – for alas these are all moot theoreticals now which no longer appear relevant beyond scattered specks of dust dancing among fading reminiscence of an evanescent experience. | 647 |

| 20 | History is written by victors, which is why it’s boring. Art is written by the outcasts and that’s what makes it special. We’ve had so many tales on Gods, Goddesses, the winners and their victories, and they become so overwhelming that they might make you want to throw up.
Life… isn’t about those victories and relentless successes, it’s rarely about your undying love and many times the good guys just fall flat and lose. The disappointments that follow later, the overwhelming feeling of defeat that creeps in and when one hits his lowest of the lows, the rockier bottoms underneath their rock bottoms is majorly what constitutes life.
Success, for sure, is an event but it’s a rare one. The glorious Gods with their flaming locks and ivory skins might rule the history books but it’s the underdogs with their unexpected small victories that make life fascinating. When their will, their vulnerability is constantly tested and yet they find a way out of it, to survive, to win or defeated again? The battle is eternal and keeps on running till they reach the finality of their fate.
The invincibility of the Gods and victors is boring. Art lies in the unpredictability and vulnerability. Art is in the Davids against their Goliaths, in Sisyphus against his Gods and in the jokers winning against their own jokes. Art is in empathy struggling to bloom in an apathetic world, a believer finding purpose in a Godless world. It's simply about defying all odds to fight and just not to win. This is why art wins over anything. It's borne out of real souls, their fires are kept alight by real blood and it helps us feel that even the misfits can sometimes create history even if they don't find a place on its pages. Art sure brings pain, it sure keeps you on the edge but rarely it keeps you under an illusion, which in my opinion, is the most beautiful thing in the world; to see the world as is. | 682 |
