The Still Point The word solstice comes from sol stitium, the sun standing still. For one breath, the great wheel stops turning. And wherever there is a pause in the cosmos, a doorway opens. This is why the ancients built in stone for this single moment. Stonehenge, Newgrange, the temples of Egypt, each aligned so that one shaft of light could enter on this day and no other. They knew the solstice not as a date, but as a portal. A thinning of the veil between the seen and the unseen. There is an older teaching here too. The mystery schools spoke of two gates in the heavens. The Gate of Cancer, which the Sun enters today, was the Gate of Men, the doorway through which souls descend into a body.
