In 1985, Klaus Gysi (SED) signed the order for the German Democratic Republic to demolish the Berlin Church of Reconciliation, which took place on January 28, 1985. One of the objectives was to create an unobstructed line of sight and of fire in the death strip in front of the so-called "Anti-Fascist Protection Wall", in order to prevent people from leaving the GDR.
