Alhamdulillah, today we have just completed Madina Book 2 🎉🎊🎉! اللهم بارك! May Allah reward all of our diligent students with good for their sacrifice in learning! There were many things they could have spent their time on, but they decided exude their efforts in order to learn the language of the Quran & Sunnah. Allahu Akbar! 🔸✴️ ما ✴️🔸 This widely used, two lettered, Arabic word is much more powerful than it looks. It not only: 🔹 Has more than 10 usages. 🔹 Brings (in certain cases) different grammatical changes to its following word. But it can also play the role of: 🔹A noun اسم 🔹A particle حرف 🔶 How can we undetstand ما in Quran and other Arabic texts? 🔶 How can we use it correctly to convey the meaning we want? ✴️ In this series we will go through some of the most common types of ما, how to use it and how to understand it إن شاء الله 📙 #Type 1: ✴️ ما الموصولة 🔸 اسم Ma al Mawsoola or the relative ma, is a noun. It is called Mawsoola because it has almost the same meaning as the relative pronoun الاسم الموصول : 🔸 الذي which/what ♦️ To know if ما is mawsoola ➡️ replace it with الذي, if the meaning of the sentence is still correct/ doesn't change, then ما is mawsoola. 🔹 Example (Quran) •{ قَالَ لَهُم مُّوسَىٰ أَلْقُوا |مَا| أَنتُم مُّلْقُونَ }• 《 Musa (Moses) said to them: "Cast down |what| you want to cast!"》[10:80] Hilali & Khan ➡️ Grammatically, we can replace ما by الذي and still have the same meaning. ألقوا |الذي| أنتم ملقون 🔸Unlike الذي ma al mawsoola is mainly used for inanimate objects. Yet, it can relate to animate objects in certain cases, such as: ➖ When inanimate and animate objects are together. (Generally with the inanimate objects being the main/most.) 🔹 Example (Quran) •{ للَّـهِ |مَا| فِي السَّمَاوَاتِ و|َمَا| فِي الْأَرْضِ}• ➡️ What is in the heavens and what is in the earth include both animate and inanimate objects. ➖ When relating to an undefined. 🔹Example •{إِذْ قَالَتِ امْرَأَتُ عِمْرَانَ رَبِّ إِنِّي نَذَرْتُ لَكَ |مَا| فِي بَطْنِي}• 《 (Remember) when the wife of 'Imran said: "O my Lord! I have vowed to You |what| (the child that) is in my womb 》 ➡️ What is in her womb could be a male or a female (at the time she said this). ♦️This type of ما doesn't bring any grammatical changes. •●💠●• Ways to ask and answer "How are you?" In Arabic and from the Sunnah ♦️ Narration -(1)- •●📜●• عَنْ عَائِشَةَ -رضي الله عنها- قَالَتْ: جَاءَتْ عَجُوزٌ إِلَى النَّبِيِّ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ وَهُوَ عِنْدِي، فَقَالَ: لَهَا رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ: (مَنْ أَنْتِ؟) قَالَتْ: أَنَا جَثَّامَةُ الْمُزَنِيَّةُ، فَقَالَ: (بَلْ أَنْتِ حسَّانَةُ الْمُزَنِيَّةُ، كَيْفَ أَنْتُمْ؟ كَيْفَ حَالُكُمْ؟ كَيْفَ كُنْتُمْ بَعْدَنَا؟) قَالَتْ: بِخَيْرٍ بِأَبِي أَنْتَ وَأُمِّي يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ، فَلَمَّا خَرَجَتْ قُلْتُ: يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ، تُقْبِلُ عَلَى هَذِهِ الْعَجُوزِ هَذَا الْإِقْبَالَ؟ فَقَالَ: ( إِنَّهَا كَانَتْ تَأْتِينَا زَمَنَ خَدِيجَةَ، وَإِنَّ حُسْنَ الْعَهْدِ مِنَ الْإِيمَانِ ) 🖋المستدرك على الصحيحين (40) حسنه الألباني في "الصحيحة" (216) •●📜●• Aisha -May Allah be pleased with her- narrated: An elderly woman came to the Messenger of Allah -May Allah exalt his mention and grant him safety- while he was in my house and he asked her: 《Who are you? 》 She said: 《I am Jathamatu-l Muzaniyyah》He said: 《Rather you are Hassanatu-l Muzaniyyah(*). How are you? How are you doing? How have you been after us?》She said: 《upon goodness, may my father and mother be sacrificed for you, O Messenger of Allah》 When she left I said: 《O Messenger of Allah you showed (so much) welcome to this old woman? So he replied:《She used to visit us upon the time of Khadeejah, and indeed loyalty is from faith.》 ✒️Al Mustadrak (40) Classed as Hasan by Al-Albaani in as-Silsilah as-Saheehah (216) (*) He changed her name to another which bears a good meaning. ♦️ Narration -(2)- •●📜●• عَنْ عَبْدِ اللهِ بنِ عَمْرٍو، قَالَ: قَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ لِرَجُلٍ: 《كَيْفَ أَصْبَحْتَ يَا فُلَانُ؟》 قَالَ: أَحْمَدُ اللهَ إِلَيْكَ يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ، فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ: 《هَذَا الَّذِي أَرَدْتُ مِنْكَ》 🖋المعجم الكبير (37) وحسنه الألباني بشواهده في السلسلة الصحيحة (2952) . •●📜●• Abdullah ibn Amr -May Allah be pleased with him- narrated: the Messenger of Allah -May Allah exalt his mention and grant him safety- said to a man:《 How are you this morning O Fulaan?(*)》 The man replied: 《I praise Allah to you O Messenger of Allah》So the Messenger of Allah -May Allah exalt his mention and grant him safety- said:《This is what I wanted [to hear] from you.》 ✒️Al Mu'jaam al Kabir (37) Classed as Hasan by Al-Albaani based on its indications in as-Silsilah as-Saheehah (2952) (*) So-and-so 🔷 Asking "How are you?" 1|⚀ كيف حالك؟ 1|⚀ How are you doing? 2|⚁ كيف أنت؟ 2|⚁ How are you? 3|⚂ كيف كنت بعدنا؟ 3|⚂ How have you been since we last met/saw? 4|⚃ كيف أصبحت؟ 4|⚃ How are you this morning? 🔷 Answering to "How are you?" 1|⚀ بخير 1|⚀ Good/upon goodness. 2|⚁ أحمد الله إليك 2|⚁ I praise Allah to you (i,e: I praise Allah for His favours by telling you about it) 🔷 More ways of asking and answering this question were reported from the Salaf.
