Best of luck with your Mains exams ...
You've worked hard, so trust your preparation, stay calm and focused, and give it your absolute best shot.
How should we approach unknown topics in the exam using a sociological perspective
✅Frame It as a Social Phenomenon
- What is the social structure behind this issue?
- Which institutions are involved?
- Who holds power, and who is marginalized?
✅Apply Sociological Lenses
- Functionalist perspective – What role does this serve in society?
- Conflict perspective – Does it reflect inequality or domination?
- Symbolic interactionism – How is meaning constructed around it?
✅Use Generic Structure: Intro–Body–Conclusion
Intro – Give a basic definition or sociological framing.
Body – Theories, dimensions (social, political, economic), examples.
Conclusion – Reflective ending: impact, social change, or resistance.
✅Use Examples and Thinkers Where Possible -
Even if the question is unknown, mention thinkers, reports, or trends to show awareness.
Thinkers: Goffman, Weber, Durkheim, Ambedkar, Srinivas, Foucault.
Social Terms: Anomie, Alienation, Hegemony, Social Control, Caste Capital, Role Conflict.
Current Examples: Dalit protests, LGBTQ+ movements, caste census debates, digital surveillance, women in SHGs.
- You may not know everything about the topic, but if you show that you’re thinking like a sociologist, the examiner will reward you.
✅ End with this Golden Line ✅
In Sociology, it’s not what you know, but how you think about what you don’t know—that gets you marks.

Typology of Social movement in relation to Social change
Ghanshyam Shah for example, has classified movements into revolt, rebellion, reform and revolution.
M.S.A. Rao has also offered more or less similar typologies: reformist, transformatory and
revolutionary.
P. N. Mukherjee talked about accumulative, alternative and
transformatory social movement.
T. K. Oommen argues that social movements normally do not have the potentialities to root out the existing system completely nor do they succumb to status quo entirely.
They, in essence, provide a space for confluence between the old and the new values and structures.
