BLUF: Suspicious incidents continue to devastate US infrastructure. Russia to send nukes to Belarus.
-----BEGIN TEARLINE-----
-National Events-
PA: Large explosion destroys R.M. Palmer Company chocolate factory in Reading. The explosion killed FIVE employees, and SIX employees are missing. Rescue operations are ongoing. Video of the explosion confirms the factory complex was completely leveled by the blast. The cause of the blast is unknown, but initial reporting indicates this may have been the result of a gas leak. However, the situation is still developing.
TX: Large explosion at the INEOS Phenol power plant in Pasadena. Initial investigation indicate the blast may have been a Boiling Liquid Expanding Vapor Explosion (BLEVE), which occured during the transfer of LPG from one tank to another. The blast injured one employee, who was treated at a local hospital.
-International Events-
Saudi Arabia: Saudi Arabia has reestablished diplomatic ties with Syria. Embassy reopening ceremonies are scheduled to take place after Eid al-Fitr, in mid April. This comes as Saudi Arabia reestablishes diplomatic ties with Iran, as well as improves relations with China.
Russia: Russia to send tactical nuclear weapons to Belarus for operational storage. This will complement Russia's fleet of bombers already stationed throughout Belarus. It is unclear as to when (or if) this move will take place, but will probably happen soon, if not already.
-Analyst Comments-
At first glance, the movement of nuclear weapons into Belarus is quite alarming, However, considering the actions of NATO over the years, this action is hardly worth worrying about at present. The main concern is that this is yet another escalation of the conflict between the US and Russia. Though, from a Russia perspective, this move is merely an attempt to keep up with the actions of the US...who has had nukes close to Russia's territory for decades; the US currently has stockpiles of nuclear weapons at bases in Turkey, Germany, Belgium, Italy, and the Netherlands. For Russia, Belarus is an old friend from a bygone era, and a symbol of Putin's romantic ideations of rebuilding the Russian empire into the greatness that the USSR never fully achieved. This is helped by the fact that Belarus is a puppet state run by an obsequious dictator who would do anything to curry favor with the Kremlin. Perhaps Belarus knows her own fate: without Russian support her national defense would be dubious at best. Ironically this remora-like behavior points to her own vulnerabilities like no other...even if Russia were to use nukes at some point, Belarus is the least likely place to launch a strike from, as the whole country is well within most of NATO's air defenses. This alone all but confirms this is merely a political chess move by the Kremlin.
