| 18 | The Two Birds
One of the greatest metaphors in the Mundaka Upanishad.
More than 2,500 years ago, the Mundaka Upanishad painted a remarkable picture.
📖 The Sanskrit begins...
Dvā suparṇā sayujā sakhāyā...
Meaning
"Two beautiful birds, inseparable friends, sit on the same tree."
Simple at first glance.
Profound for a lifetime.
The Upanishad tells us that:
🌳 The tree represents human life.
🐦 The first bird eats the fruits of the tree.
It enjoys the sweet fruits.
It suffers the bitter fruits.
It represents the Jīvātman... the individual self experiencing success and failure, pleasure and pain.
🕊 The second bird never eats.
It simply observes.
Peaceful.
Silent.
Unaffected.
It represents the Paramātman... the Supreme Self, the eternal witness.
The first bird, exhausted by chasing the fruits of life, finally turns towards the radiant bird.
In that moment...
its sorrow begins to disappear.
Why?
Because it recognises its own higher nature.
The Upanishad is teaching self-realisation.
Not leadership.
Not management.
Not productivity.
And yet...
timeless wisdom often finds new relevance.
Perhaps every professional has two birds within.
One bird is constantly doing.
Closing audits.
Building businesses.
Meeting deadlines.
Chasing results.
The other bird quietly observes.
It pauses before reacting.
It reflects before deciding.
It asks:
Is this the right thing to do?
Will this decision stand the test of time?
The first bird builds experience.
The second bird builds wisdom.
The first bird earns competence.
The second bird earns judgment.
And perhaps...
the finest professionals are not those who are always busy.
