🔎Research Spotlight: Blockchain for smarter and sustainable innovation🔗📈 How can blockchain technology reshape the innovation landscape? This question is explored in "Tokenizing Innovation: A Blockchain-Based Innovation System as a Step Toward Achieving Sustainable Development," a recent study published in Sustainable Development by Ibrahim Alnafrah, Postdoc Researcher at the Laboratory for International and Regional Economics and Associate Professor at the Department of Economics at GSEM UrFU. The study examines Russia's university innovation system, focusing on the low commercialization rates of patents. Despite thousands of patents being registered, many remain unused due to inefficient collaboration and limited market integration.
Prof. Alnafrah: "One of the key barriers we identified is that universities predominantly collaborate with other academic institutions rather than with the private sector, limiting commercialization potential. Additionally, regional clustering in patenting activities restricts nationwide innovation synergies. Given these structural failures, we propose a blockchain-based IPR management system that introduces tokenization, ensuring a transparent, decentralized, and incentive-driven approach to fostering innovation and commercialization. The biggest challenge in implementing blockchain for patent systems lies in aligning legal and institutional frameworks with this decentralized technology."
Beyond efficiency, the study links blockchain’s potential to achieving Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) 4, 8, 9, and 17, emphasizing how smarter innovation ecosystems can drive economic growth, industry development, and stronger international partnerships. The author believes that to drive this transformation, policymakers should: ⚖️ Adapt regulations to recognize blockchain-based patents, 🤝 Promote collaboration between universities, businesses, and governments, 💰Introduce incentives like funding schemes and tax benefits. These steps will help integrate blockchain into the innovation ecosystem, boosting commercialization and sustainable development. 💡 Can blockchain unlock the full potential of innovation, or will regulatory and institutional barriers slow its adoption?
