Word of the Day Bonus Issue Giving new shares to existing shareholders is called a ‘bonus issue’. Through this, a company’s total number of shares increase in the markets. Example: you hold 1 stock of a company and it has announced a 4:1 bonus issue. This means, for your 1 stock, you will get 4 stocks of the same company. But the value of each stock falls. If one stock was Rs 10 per share earlier, it will now become Rs 2 (Rs 10/5) since there are 5 stocks in total for the same value.
