Trends happen when the market agrees. Volatility happens when the market argues. Tops and bottoms are the loudest arguments. Trends pay you for being early. Trends shout in one voice. Reversals argue in many voices. Volatility tells you which one you’re hearing. Both continuations and reversals can be volatile, but the texture of that volatility is completely different. Once you see the difference, charts stop feeling random. Continuation volatility is directional and efficient. (This is volatility that reinforces direction.) Reversal volatility is two-sided and wasteful. (This is volatility that destroys direction.) Reversals don’t announce themselves. They interrupt what used to make sense.
