More than a hundred Indigenous spiritual leaders walked into the main hall of the Palau de Congressos in Girona singing, and the audience, on its feet, fell silent. That is how the first World Ayahuasca Forum began on September 11.
Over three days, the dialogues shaped a question that ran through the whole program: who decides what deserves the name of medicine, which territories sustain that knowledge, and what obligations arise when it is received.
We wrote a chronicle of the voices, the moments, and the questions that remain open.

| 2 | For over a decade, ICEERS' legal defense program (widely known as the Ayahuasca Defense Fund, or ADF) has supported nearly 500 legal cases across 49 countries. The same gap kept surfacing: the legal instruments that protect these practices exist, but scattered across treaties, rulings, and reports rarely consulted together.
The International Legal Architecture of Ayahuasca brings that whole map together for the first time: binding treaties, human rights case law, the drug control framework, and the strategies that connect them.
No UN convention lists ayahuasca as a controlled substance — the INCB has confirmed this since 2010 — yet enforcement varies enormously by country. This report offers a shared reference point for lawyers, communities, and advocates.

| 3 | "Illegal drugs" is a phrase that hides a mistake.
The law doesn't act on substances. It acts on people — on what we do, in what context, with what intent. Call a plant "illegal," and you hand it an agency it doesn't have, moving the law away from where it actually works: human practices, human rights, human consequences.
That shift isn't just semantic. It shapes who gets prosecuted, which practices get delegitimized, and which knowledge disappears. The same plant, the same ceremony, the same people — completely different legal outcomes depending on jurisdiction, interpretation, and the framing available to a court.
Our new article follows the language of drug policy from courtrooms all the way into the search bar, where "is ayahuasca legal?" teaches millions to ask the wrong question — and proposes a better one.
A drug policy for people, not a people policy for drugs.

| 4 | As ayahuasca tourism continues to grow worldwide, important questions emerge about cultural heritage, sustainability, and the rights of Indigenous peoples whose traditions have sustained these practices for generations.
In this article from The Psychedelic Society, socio-environmental scientist and World Ayahuasca Forum co-director Aili Pyhälä reflects on the complex impacts of globalization on Indigenous communities, highlighting both the opportunities and challenges created by the expanding interest in ayahuasca.
The piece offers a thoughtful exploration of one of the key questions facing the field today: how can these medicines be shared across cultures while respecting and protecting the communities from which they originate?

| 5 | What happens to a person's psyche one year after attending a Shipibo-led ayahuasca retreat in the Amazon? A new study led by ICEERS researchers followed 264 Western participants over twelve months and documented significant, lasting psychological changes.
The results show notable reductions in neuroticism, improvements in quality of life across all measured domains, and a pronounced increase in decentering capacity — the ability to observe one's own thoughts and emotions without getting caught up in them. 91.7% of participants reported long-term benefits. Adverse effects were minimal: 2.3%.

| 6 | Fifty-five years after its adoption, the UN Convention on Psychotropic Substances still functions as the backbone of the international regime that restricts access to compounds such as DMT, psilocybin, and mescaline.
A recent study, based on thousands of documents from the UN archives, exposes that the decision to place them on the strictest rung of control did not stem from pharmacological evidence, but from a combination of media-driven panic, Cold War geopolitical loyalties, and the absence of economic defenders.

| 7 | Today marks ten years since UNGASS — the UN General Assembly Special Session on the world drug problem. In 2016, the outcome document introduced a new vocabulary: human rights, public health, proportionality. A decade later, that vocabulary remains largely untranslated into practice for those who need it most.
In this article we examine three moments in which the Vienna system was forced to move — on cannabis, coca leaf, and harm reduction — and what they reveal about a system capable of changing, but only under duress, at the narrowest margin, and on its own terms.
We also look at what that system continues to fail to see: the communities that maintain relationships with traditional plant medicines — ayahuasca, iboga, peyote, San Pedro, coca leaf — for whom the legal categories of the twentieth century were never designed.

| 10 | What does it really mean to integrate a psychedelic experience — beyond protocols, techniques, or external guidance?
In this new conversation, Marc Aixalà — psychologist, Holotropic breathwork facilitator, and co-founder of ICEERS' El Faro Support Center — shares insights drawn from more than a decade accompanying people through challenging experiences, and over 1,000 cases supported.
Together with Dr. Sandra Dreisbach, he explores questions that often remain in the background:
— How to approach integration in a way that respects each person’s own process
— What role shadow material and difficult experiences can play in growth
— Why reclaiming one’s own inner authority matters more than following any external framework
This conversation moves away from simplified narratives and goes deeper into what healing can look like when it emerges from within — not imposed from outside. For anyone navigating an experience that still feels alive, unresolved, or meaningful, this episode offers perspective, nuance, and grounded reflection.

| 13 | World Ayahuasca Forum Visionary Benki Piyãko Wins Prestigious Niwano Peace Prize
Indigenous spiritual leader Benki Piyãko of the Ashaninka people in Brazil has been awarded the Niwano Peace Prize, an international recognition honoring individuals who advance peace and interreligious cooperation.
Benki has spent more than fifteen years defending Indigenous lands, promoting ecological restoration in the Amazon, and safeguarding traditional knowledge for future generations.
He is also a visionary voice within the World Ayahuasca Forum, where Indigenous leadership and traditional knowledge play a central role in the global conversation around sacred plant traditions, cultural rights, and environmental stewardship.
ICEERS celebrates this recognition of Indigenous leadership and the global importance of protecting traditional knowledge and the ecosystems that sustain it.

| 14 | 448 cases. 49 countries. Ten years of legal support.
Over the past decade, ICEERS has supported hundreds of legal cases involving traditional plant practices — from ayahuasca ceremonies to cases involving psilocybin mushrooms and coca leaf.
Our latest article looks back at ten years of legal support: emerging legal trends, new challenges for Indigenous healers and communities, and why prevention and legal awareness are becoming increasingly important.

| 15 | A new chapter begins at ICEERS.
After years of dedicated work, several key team members are moving on to new paths. Their contributions have been fundamental to research, advocacy, and community care.
This transition marks both an ending and a renewal. ICEERS remains firmly committed to rigor, human rights, and responsible engagement with plant medicines.

| 16 | A court in Massachusetts (U.S.) brought to an end a criminal case in which a retired police officer had been charged with cocaine trafficking after purchasing coca leaf tea online. After more than two years of proceedings — and with technical support from ICEERS — the trafficking charges were dismissed and the case was reduced to a minor possession offense related to a plant infusion.
The ruling underscores the importance of distinguishing, in legal terms, between a traditional plant and its processed derivatives. It also highlights how rigid interpretations of drug control laws can lead to disproportionate criminal proceedings.

| 17 | A new circle is opening
Over the years, many of you have asked:
Where can we safely raise legal questions?
Where can we consult medical concerns with rigor?
How do we handle difficult cases with confidence?
How do we safeguard sacred plant work within existing laws?
How do we deepen integration?
How do we contribute, and not just receive from the plants?
From listening to the collective
today we are launching
ICEERS Community Circles:
ICEERS Community Circles
is a membership program
that supports our mission,
and gives you access to guidance,
learning, and resources
so you don't have to figure it out alone.
A mutual support structure designed
to accompany real processes.
Different circles for different needs:
from participants beginning their path
to guides, organizations, and stewards holding complex responsibilities.
Joining the Circle is a commitment to mutual care.
We are shifting from periodic support
to sustained partnership.
Not donors,
partners.
Not transactions,
commitments.
Not occasional support,
sustained alliance.
For nearly 20 years, ICEERS has accompanied thousands of people:
guides, practitioners, researchers, families, Indigenous peoples, policymakers, journalists, therapists.
We have gathered communities,
supported difficult cases,
defended people facing prosecution,
generated research and evidence,
shifted narratives, and
built bridges where fragmentation once prevailed.
Along the way, a shared realization kept returning:
This work cannot rest on a small team alone.
The field keeps growing.
The risks have expanded.
The responsibilities have increased.
And so must the circle that sustains all of it.

| 20 | The World Economic Forum returned to Davos in a context marked by geopolitical uncertainty and increased international tension. Amid official speeches, protests, and parallel meetings, one idea was repeated insistently: the growing recognition that current systems no longer respond to social, ecological, and human challenges.
Against this backdrop, ICEERS founder Benjamin De Loenen participated in a mission focused on strengthening alliances with the Indigenous world, alongside leader Biraci Nixiwaka Brasil Yawanawa and his Nixiwaka Institute. The agenda included meetings at venues such as Climate Hub, UnDavos, and Mental Health Day, where conversations were opened with networks, initiatives, and international actors interested in promoting intercultural collaborations.
