April 28, 2021 (JUBA) - The United States embassy in Juba has condemned the violent April 24 attack on humanitarian staff and assets in Jam Jang, an area located in South Sudan’s Unity State. In a statement issued Wednesday, the embassy said criminals stormed the compound where humanitarian workers, including U.S. government implementing partners, and their families were located. “Staff were threatened, robbed, and beaten, sustaining serious injuries,” partly reads the statement extended to Sudan Tribune. “Such acts of violence are unacceptable and must stop”, it added. The embassy urged authorities at all levels to ensure accountability by arresting those responsible and to guarantee the safety and security of humanitarian workers who are committed to helping the people of South Sudan. “We also call on all South Sudanese to condemn those individuals who carried out this attack,” it stressed. According to the statement, young people in South Sudan deserve better employment and economic opportunities, but violence and threats against humanitarian workers are likely to delay and interrupt the provision of life-saving assistance to the most vulnerable communities. The U.S., however, said it remains fully committed to providing humanitarian assistance to the South Sudanese people, urging other donors and the South Sudan government to work with the international community to support the humanitarian response in South Sudan.

Ramadan is a month of giving for Muslims. It is also the time for even more charity projects that help people in need. One of these projects is being carried out by the Turkish Red Crescent in Somalia, which will finish distributing 7,000 food parcels for people in need by the end of the holy month of Ramadan. More than 2.5 million people in Somalia need humanitarian assistance due to natural disasters, conflict and the coronavirus pandemic.  More than 80% of the country is also experiencing moderate to severe drought conditions.  Since 1990, Somalia has experienced more than 30 climate-related hazards, including 12 droughts and 19 floods. Drought conditions will affect an estimated at least 3.4 million people by the end of 2021, and some 380,000 are expected to be displaced. ________________________________
