One of my favourite things about Rooney’s works is her explorations of the ways that living under capitalist society fundamentally affects the relationships we enter into/think we are capable of entering into, and the ones we have have with ourselves and each other.
I adore that her books look into so many sorts of interpersonal relationships that exist around us, however normal, odd or even dystopian (if you really think about it) they seem, and how these relationships tend to change our perception of self or the world. In a time where each of us are becoming more connected by technology yet taught to be so much more atomised by the world, it is a relief to simply be in the wake of these characters and their stories.

Personally, some of the most powerful experieces that come out of reading Rooney's books are the empathy and self-reflexivity that always comes out of it. Between my self-involved existential dread and a painful awareness of the perplexing state of the world, I always find myself grateful to be seen, heard, and then challenged emotionally with her books; I do think that is her strength. She doesn't necessarily write anything particularly groundbreaking that hasn't already been said but she has such a way of writing that makes you feel so deeply, and I think taking the time to feel is such a lost art nowadays.
While all the themes mentioned are very much present throughout her books, I think she gets better and better with each publication and they come out the most clearly and beautifully in BWWAY (my review here). Normal People is the most beloved, probably because it is also the most accessible in being a more straightforward romance. I’ve heard the most negative reviews about Conversation with Friends though I suspect that has to do with how likeable the characters are, and well, they’re not really written to be particularly likeable in the way most protagonists are.
I encourage you to read the books with empathy for the characters, for these people who live lives that are far different than your’s, and who do things that you might not immediately seem to understand or resonate with. It made my reading experience so thoroughly fulfilling to feel with and for them, and it seems like that is Rooney’s approach while writing too! Happy reading 🥰

One of the most beautiful pieces of prose I've read in a long time!! A love story (love story!! NOT ROMANCE!!) written by a Brazililan author, this book is short but so so dense in the best way. It's about a woman who is learning to live & love herself, the man of her desire, and the world around her. What does it mean to love and must we do it alone first? What is living and what are all these questions for?
