Cloudflare replaces CAPTCHAs with their "Turnstile" product, which is basically a script rotating challenges that require no human interaction. This is their response to the fact that CAPTCHAs do not work anymore due to ML advancements. This radically changes the status quo: the only methods that work now are real-time activity metadata analysis and proof-of-work challenges. Real-time activity metadata analysis can only be deployed at a scale of no less than Cloudflare's: the larger the scale, the more efficient it is. Will naturally converge to a monopoly because of that. Proof-of-work challenges can be deployed by anyone without third party involvement. The huge problem is: running the challenge is only possible if certain client requirements are met (JS, WASM availability). It is not general enough and can't compete with Cloudflare's "enable and forget" approach.
