🔄 THROWBACK THURSDAY: The Great Ethereum Split of 2016 Greetings Great CBC Fam! Let's rewind to July 20, 2016 - a day that forever changed how we think about blockchain immutability and community governance. The Ethereum community faced its biggest crisis when The DAO (Decentralized Autonomous Organization) was hacked, resulting in $50 million worth of ETH being stolen. The community was split: should they reverse the hack through a hard fork, or preserve the "code is law" principle? After intense debate, the majority chose to hard fork, creating two separate blockchains. The new chain became Ethereum (ETH), while those who disagreed continued with the original chain, now called Ethereum Classic (ETC). This wasn't just a technical decision - it was a philosophical battle about the nature of decentralization. Should blockchains be truly immutable, or can communities collectively decide to "undo" malicious actions? What makes this moment fascinating? It proved that even in decentralized systems, human consensus ultimately drives major decisions. The split also demonstrated that blockchain communities could survive fundamental disagreements by creating separate paths forward. Today, both chains continue to operate, each serving different philosophies about blockchain governance. Key Developments Coinbase Institutional Head of Strategy says, “Bitcoin miners cannot produce #Bitcoin as fast as the overwhelming demand.” Demand is exceeding the new supply. 🚀 US cuts tariffs from 145% to 30% on Chinese imports, while China reduces duties from 125% to 10% on US goods. Both countries announce 90-day temporary reduction to cool trade tensions. Dubai Finance signs MoU with Crypto.com to enable cryptocurrency payments for its government fees. Micro Strategy acquires 13,390 $BTC for $1.34B, raising total holdings to 568,840 $BTC worth $39.41B at an average of $69,287 per coin.
