This whole project could be pulled off with a simple 555 timer IC and a few discrete components. Just try it out as you ppl know abt 555 already..

18) What are the uses of the keyword static? Static keyword can be used with variables as well as functions. A variable declared static will be of static storage class and within a function, it maintains its value between calls to that function. A variable declared as static within a file, scope of that variable will be within that file, but it can't be accessed by other files. Functions declared static within a module can be accessed by other functions within that module. That is, the scope of the function is localized to the module within which it is declared.

You can also use direct ready sensors like MAXIM’s MAX30100 which is a is a fully integrated optical bio-sensor for complete pulse oximetry and heart rate measurement.

Well as you can see from above theory you can easily make your own Pulse Oximeter sensor using an IR Transmitter, red LED & an Light Dependent Resistor (LDR).  Which then can be connected to a micro-controller and the ratio (red light absorbed vs Infra-red light absorbed) can then be calculated and from that SPO2 value can be calculated. 

In Reflective method the LED & the photo-detector are placed on the same side i.e. next to each other. In the reflective method there will be some fixed light reflection back to the sensor due to finger. With each heart-beat there will be an increase in blood volume in the finger this will result in more light reflection back to the sensor.
