1. The Fed raised interest rates for the first time in three years. Officials unanimously voted 12 to 0 to lift the target range by a 0.25%, to 3.75% to 4%.
2. The bigger news was the guidance for what comes next. Sixteen of eighteen Fed officials expect at least one more hike this year, and four of them want two more. Fed Chair Kevin Warsh said the plain fact is that inflation is too high, and that this summer's readings do not show underlying inflation improving.
3. Wall Street had priced in the hike itself at over 90%, so it was the hawkish tone that hit markets. The Dow fell 631 points, or 1.2%, its worst day for bank stocks since February. The S&P 500 fell 0.45% while the Nasdaq barely moved.
4. The surprising part was which stocks fell hardest. Goldman Sachs, Wells Fargo, Bank of America and Citigroup all dropped more than 3%, even though higher rates usually help banks earn more on loans. Investors are betting that more hikes ahead will hurt loan demand and credit quality more than any margin gain helps.
5. The US 10 year Treasury yield stayed above 5%, a level it first reached on Tuesday for the first time since 2007. Gold fell 1.2% to about $4,240 an ounce as the US dollar strengthened.
6. Singapore investors should note that S-REITs are already down 8.2% this year while the STI is up nearly 25% to a record high, led by our own banks. The market has been pricing in higher for longer for months, and Wall Street's reaction is a reminder that rising rates only help banks up to a point before loan and credit worries start to bite.
7. What we're watching next: the Bank of Japan decides on rates Friday at 2:30pm Singapore time, and every economist surveyed expects a hike to 1.25%. It is the first time the BOJ and the Fed have both made decisions in the same week this cycle. A bigger hike than expected would matter here too. Cheap yen borrowing has helped fund parts of the AI trade, and if that borrowing gets costlier, investors may sell those stocks to repay their loans, what's known as unwinding the yen carry trade.
