She looks at the sergeant and asks the only question that matters: “Am I a patient, or am I a prisoner?” That is not a rhetorical flourish. That is the precise description of what American hospitals became in 2020 and 2021. Let me speak as a physician who has actually stood in those rooms. When a hospital tells a family “she will be dead in 24 hours” and then stops treating her, they have abandoned the practice of medicine. They have substituted a protocol for a patient.
