■ SMALL HYDROPOWER.

◇ There is no globally accepted definition of a small Hydropower plant (SHP) because different countries use different capacity limits for defining.
◇ For example – Developed countries have a range of 1.5 to 2.0 MW whereas in developing countries the limits varies from 25 – 50 MW. In India Hydropower plants with a capacity up to 25MW considered SHP.
◇ Generation of electricity from small sized hydropower sources is a low cost, environment friendly and renewable source of energy.
◇ Small and mini hydel projects have the potential to provide energy in remote and hilly areas where extension of grid system un economical.
◇ The first SHP of 130 KW was installed at Darjeeling in 1897. This was followed by mysore in 1902.
◇ Karnataka tops in both potential and installed capacity followed by HP.

■ BIO – ENERGY

◇ Bio energy is a clean source of energy which improves sanitation, hygiene and the living style of the rural population.
◇ This technique is based on the decomposition of organic matter in absence of air to produce gas.
◇ India has a capacity to produce bio-gas to the extent of 25,000 million cubic m. the left over digested slurry serves as manure. This can meet 50% of rural domestic fuel instruments.
◇ UP has the highest potential in bio-gas, followed by MP, AN P, and bihar.
◇ MH – highest production followed by Gujarat and UP.
◇ The development of bio-gas is adversely affected because of the non-availability of cattle dung, water, labour, space and low temperatures in certain parts of the country, especially during winter season.

■ NUCLEAR ENERGY.

◇ Nuclear energy is obtained from Uranium and Thorium.
◇ Nuclear power contributes only 2.75% of our total power generation at present.
◇ India is of the few countries which have developed the capability of designing, constructing, commissioning, and operating a nuclear power station without any help from outside.
◇ The real progress was made only after the establishment of the Atomic energy institution at trombay in 1954. This was renamed as the Bhabha atomic research centre (BARC) in 1967.
◇ The first nuclear power station with 320MW capacity was set up at Tarapur near Mumbai in 1969.
◇ Later, atomic reactors were installed at rawatbhata near Kota in rajasthan, Kalpakkam in TN, and Narora in UP, kaiga in Karnataka and Kakarapara in Gujarat also have nuclear energy plants.
