■ NUCLEAR ENERGY. #Economicgeography ◇ Nuclear energy is obtained from Uranium and Thorium. ◇ Nuclear power contributes only 2.75% of our total power generation at present. ◇ India is of the few countries which have developed the capability of designing, constructing, commissioning, and operating a nuclear power station without any help from outside. ◇ The real progress was made only after the establishment of the Atomic energy institution at trombay in 1954. This was renamed as the Bhabha atomic research centre (BARC) in 1967. ◇ The first nuclear power station with 320MW capacity was set up at Tarapur near Mumbai in 1969. ◇ Later, atomic reactors were installed at rawatbhata near Kota in rajasthan, Kalpakkam in TN, and Narora in UP, kaiga in Karnataka and Kakarapara in Gujarat also have nuclear energy plants. ▪︎SOURCE - D.R.
