#BeOpenARCH Studio Bua, with offices in London and Oslo, has turned a derelict farm building in Iceland into a stunning artist’s studio and residence. The architects preserved the barn's strong concrete structure while adding a new gabled volume that houses living spaces with breathtaking views of the fjord. Inside, simplicity reigns with exposed concrete, birch plywood, and sustainable materials—many sourced from local recycling centers. On the ground floor, the concrete walls were left largely untouched, with minimal openings made only where necessary to let in more natural light, while on the upper level large windows frame the stunning landscape, making it the perfect environment for artistic inspiration. #BeOpenARCH Italian architecture studio Una/Unless, led by Giulia Foscari, has designed a captivating wedge-shaped pavilion for the debut of he Accademia di Belle Arti di Venezia at the Venice Art Biennale. The shimmering blue structure, inspired by both the Renaissance facades of the historic building and the deep ocean’s mysteries, is a stunning visual dialogue between past and future. The pavilion houses Swell of Spæc(i)es, an immersive exhibition by artist Josèfa Ntjam, blending AI-generated animations with an otherworldly soundscape. Its high-tech blue skin ripples like water, reflecting the surroundings in a dynamic display, while a curved curtain inside echoes the lost chapel of Jacopo Sansovino.

#BeOpenARCH A team of architects, engineers, and biologists from the University of Freiburg and the University of Stuttgart has unveiled the world’s first load-bearing structure made entirely from robotically wound flax fiber. Located in the botanical garden at the University of Freiburg, LivMatS Pavilion combines renewable, biodegradable flax with cutting-edge robotic fabrication to create a sustainable and eco-friendly building. The pavilion's unique design features 15 prefabricated flax fiber components, robotically wound into a precise truss structure. This process ensures no material waste, while the structure weighs just 1.5 tons and spans 46 square meters. Covered in a waterproof polycarbonate skin, the pavilion is protected from the elements, making it not only visually striking but also durable and functional. Discover more pavilions in our blog.

#BeOpenDESIGN Mongolian designer Sarina has created a duo of minimalist birch bark stools as a tribute to the craftsmanship of the Oroqen people of Inner Mongolia. The stools are beautifully wrapped in the outer bark of birch trees, chosen for its unique silvery texture and natural beauty. Sarina’s design blends traditional techniques with modern aesthetics, using steamed bark to create a pliable material that is hand-stitched together with intricate, wavy detailing. Each stool, one arch-shaped and the other oval, embodies the strength and grace of nature, adding a sculptural touch to any space.

#BeOpenDESIGN Central Saint Martins graduate Kiki Grammatopoulos is pushing boundaries with her project Rewild the Run, which aims to transform urban spaces through fashion and sport. She designed a chunky running shoe outsole featuring tiny hooks inspired by the natural process of epizoochory, allowing seeds to attach and disperse as the wearer runs. By emulating plants like the cocklebur, her design not only grips dirt but also encourages ecological restoration in cities. Drawing inspiration from keystone species like the bison, Grammatopoulos envisions her footwear as a way to reconnect urban dwellers with nature. Currently testing her prototype with London’s Run the Boroughs, she explores how sport can drive ecological engagement and help cities thrive alongside biodiversity. #BeOpenARCH Soup Chi Restaurant, designed by H.O.M Design and Construction Company, skillfully transforms the challenges of a 40-year-old building in Tehran into distinctive architectural features. The design team encountered obstacles such as a central metal column and an awkward facade due to outdated construction regulations. Rather than seeing these as limitations, the architects creatively incorporated them into the design, enriching the restaurant's character. The interior showcases design elements that complement the existing structure, turning the central column into a striking focal point and enhancing the facade’s niche to establish an inviting, dynamic street presence.
