Studio Bua, with offices in London and Oslo, has turned a derelict farm building in Iceland into a stunning artist’s studio and residence. The architects preserved the barn's strong concrete structure while adding a new gabled volume that houses living spaces with breathtaking views of the fjord. Inside, simplicity reigns with exposed concrete, birch plywood, and sustainable materials—many sourced from local recycling centers. On the ground floor, the concrete walls were left largely untouched, with minimal openings made only where necessary to let in more natural light, while on the upper level large windows frame the stunning landscape, making it the perfect environment for artistic inspiration.

A team of architects, engineers, and biologists from the University of Freiburg and the University of Stuttgart has unveiled the world’s first load-bearing structure made entirely from robotically wound flax fiber. Located in the botanical garden at the University of Freiburg, LivMatS Pavilion combines renewable, biodegradable flax with cutting-edge robotic fabrication to create a sustainable and eco-friendly building.
The pavilion's unique design features 15 prefabricated flax fiber components, robotically wound into a precise truss structure. This process ensures no material waste, while the structure weighs just 1.5 tons and spans 46 square meters. Covered in a waterproof polycarbonate skin, the pavilion is protected from the elements, making it not only visually striking but also durable and functional.
