Originating as a circle drawn in the sands of Abu Dhabi by artist Jim Denevan with a simple stick, Self Similar has evolved into one of the largest land art installations ever created. Sculpted as a central part of a city-wide light art exhibition, Manar Abu Dhabi, it spans nearly one square kilometer and reaches a towering height of twenty-seven meters. Visitors are invited to engage with the installation. E.g. they are invited to climb two observation mounds to enjoy panoramic views of the surrounding natural landscape.

Developed by Central Saint Martins graduate Annie Larkins, the project playfully named An Egg Without a Chicken addresses issues of unethical and unsustainable industrial farming practices of chicken eggs with an unusually shaped plant-based alternative. The key ingredient that is used to replicate the nutrients of a real egg is a pea protein isolate. Kala Namak salt, a kiln-fired rock salt used in South Asia, is utilized to reproduce the egg's "sulphur-like" taste, while an alginate, an acid found in the cell walls of brown algae, helps create a yolk-like form that can burst like the real thing.

Retail iGreen Gadgets has launched iGreen Cover, a series of compostable iPhone cases that allows the user to grow herbs and flowers instead of discarding them after use. The inside part of the cover has a water-soluble protective film that dissolves and spills the seeds, when the cover is put into soil The colour of the compostable iPhone case corresponds to a certain herb or flower: yellow for daisies, blue for forget-me-nots, and green for basil.

Viennese designer Barbara Gollackner has teamed up with Austrian chef and restaurant owner Martin Kilga to create Wasteware, a collection of bowls, plates and cutlery, that are 3D printed from food waste, such as pork skin and stale bread. To create the sustainable material, the waste is dried and blended into a smooth paste that is bound together by mycelium before being inserted into a 3D printer.

Local studio The Bloom Architects has topped a family home in Bao Loc, Vietnam with an inverted roof. Designed to remain cool despite the tropical climate, the Tile House features a large central courtyard, described by the team as a “light-wind hole,” which helps to distribute air and light through the spaces. This open space allows for rainwater collection and provides thermal comfort in both the rainy and sunny seasons.

As part of his graduation project in The Design Academy Eindhoven, French artist and designer Edern Janneau has created a device that translates bodily movements into beautiful sounds. Named Melodic Gesture, the table explores the relation between gesture and sound through the practice of sport. Where the ball hits the table determines the note and the reverb percentage, the height determines the pitch change and the speed before each hit determines the note velocity. When the ball hits the racket, the base note A is performed. Each sound sets the base for the next motion, creating the basis of art created as a performance.

During Stockholm Creative Edition 2023, Stockholm-based design studio Interesting Times Gang and cooperative homebuilder OBOS have introduced a biophilic interior design wall-as-furniture concept – LOOM, made from mycelium, and JUGOSO, created from 3D-printed orange peel rinds.The modular product can be used as a partition/acoustic wall and double as a decorative element. Each wall has a distinct character and biophilic timelessness. While LOOM is reminiscent of mushroom roots, JUGOSO's geometric form is inspired by the orange's juicy vesicles.

Developed by bioMATTERS, research and design studio based in New York City and London, the MYCO-ALGA is an interior tiling system that is made from domestic and industrial organic waste that have been upcycled together with actual living organisms. The tiles are computationally designed, robotically fabricated, grown and dyed by microbes. The process begins with the organic waste being ground into paste-like substrate, which is then 3D printed into customized shapes. These are then cultivated in a controlled environment for two weeks and placed in convection ovens where they turn into the material, which is simultaneously lightweight and strong. The gel-like bio-pigments from the harvested algae are then applied to the tiles.

Spanish designer Júlia Roca Vera has created a line of cosmetics from fruit that was thrown away because they do not meet aesthetic standards used by supermarkets. Named Lleig, after the Catalan word for ugly, the range includes four products all made using one single orange. Soap and moisturizing cream are created using the fruit's flesh and essential oils, juice is squeeze out for drinking, while the dehydrated peel serves as a potpourri that releases aroma. Packaged in sculptural ceramic vessels, the four ingredients are designed as a part of a ritual that borrows from holistic bathing traditions which have existed since ancient Greece.

To reduce the negative impact of traditional epoxy resin-heavy, foam surfboards on the ever-growing problem of global warming, surf designers are in constant search of eco-friendly alternatives. French designer Jérémy Lucas and the Paradoxal Surfboards team use upcycled sargassum algae, collected directly from Ris Beach, Spain, to 3D print a surfboard. The structure and design of the Paradoxal Surfboard is inspired directly from the honeycomb shape of nano-structures within the algae itself. The circular honeycomb pattern with empty cavities gives the 3D-printed surfboard its enhanced sturdiness and greater resistance to dents, regardless of the frequency of use or intensity of the waves.

The idea of the OoOoooOoooOh la l'ice necklace came to art jeweler Laila El Mehelmy and designers of the Paris-based design studio Golem during a hot 24 hour party in Berlin, when heated partygoers started rubbing each other with ice cubes. Conceived as the materialization of the evanescence of our most essential element, the piece is made from ice cubes and melts within 30 minutes on the warm bare skin or roughly an hour when worn on top of a garment. The necklace comes with a custom-made silicone tray allowing its owner to freeze it on demand. When not iced, it can be worn as a silver beaded necklace, or doubled as a choker.

Nisarga Art Hub is a cultural center conceived by a family of musicians and created by local architectural practice Wallmakers in Ernakulam, India, in a bid to make a community residency where people can interact and congregate for art and cultural events. The site was near a paddy field, with the traditional Kerala Roofs characterized by their sloping, tiled surfaces, being the only feature crowding the horizon around it. The architects incorporated the series of skylights into the roof, which angled at 35 degrees to match the angle of an open-air amphitheater, also double as seating spaces for an audience.

Aiming to help women overcome embarrassment that is associated with sanitary products, Swedish designer Katarina Hornwall has created a necklace with a pendant that can be used to carry tampons. Made from solid aluminium and brass bars, the Emergency Tampon necklace pendant takes shape of a metallic case that is designed for a tampon to fit neatly inside. The pendant's domed tip is made with a computer numerically controlled (CNC) lathe. The design is supposed to be a bit provoking, letting the normally taboo product be a bit of a show off.

Situated on a formerly deserted site next to the HYLLA Vintage Hotel in Lijiang, China, the Wilderness Garden and the 1,500 sqm outdoor Amphitheater have been designed by landscape architecture practice Z’scape to establish a contrast and integration between the wild nature and the artificially geometric order. The amphitheater is enclosed by a circular ramp and a terraced platform that echoes the image of stepped rice fields. The traditional Naxi Torch Festival is held here annually, where people pay tribute to the snow mountain and ancient folk traditions and pray for a good harvest.

Chinese practice Trace Architecture Office has created a complex of three buildings for the new Aranya Theatre complex at a seaside resort in Hebei, China. The complex provides multi-functional places suitable for different forms of performance. While the two rectangular buildings are connected by the lobby in the middle, the outdoor amphitheatre is located at the corner and serves as a city square. This solution opens up the unique seaside theatre, transforming the sea and the city into a background for the stage.
