#BeOpenARCH What looks like a setting for an utopian movie is in fact the European Library of Information and Culture (BEIC) proposal by noa*, an architecture practice with offices in Italy and Germany. Titled The Tree of Knowledge, the project is characterized by the atmosphere of a natural landscape permeating the whole place and is dominated by a distinctive organic roof ring, which unexpectedly houses a blossoming park. The new nine-storey cultural centre is topped by a circular study room for 200 people, with a 360° view over Milan, where the building is set to be erected. This can be accesses via a one-of-a-kind elevator that comprises a tower of books, picked up as needed by an automated system.

#BeOpenARCH Approached by a young family, whose children longed to have a treehouse but could not have one because of the lack of trees in their backyard, London-based architecture studio De Matos Ryan has designed Penfold, a timber playhouse that rises as high as the surrounding canopy. The structure consists of prefabricated triangular Douglas Fir frames combined to make a truncated pyramidal form. The Siberian Larch slatted cladding has a stainless-steel cable lattice to encourage climbing plants over the volume and ultimately create the sense of a tree that never was, while a low portal at the base of the build is the only way to access the treehouse, which is a great way to keep adults out.

#BeOpenARCH Dutch architecture studio MVRDV has been commissioned by non-profit educational institution TUMO Tirana to convert the deteriorating 1980s brutalist Pyramid of Tirana in the Albanian capital into a youth-focused cultural hub. The team has chosen to remove additions from previous renovations to reveal a voluminous interior space and radically open up the building by replacing the original glass façade with large glass flaps that can be closed when it rains. Exterior steps made using the stone tiles that originally adorned the façade are added to the sloping concrete beams. The steps can be used for sightseeing and temporary events, as well as for literally walking over the pyramid, right to its top. One of the beams will be preserved as a slope that visitors can slide down – at their own risk. More modern pyramids in our blog

#BeOpenDESIGN Aiming to fight food waste, Northumbria University graduate Harriet Almond has developed Snoot, a prototype for an aroma detector that detects gases released by decaying food and suggests ways to cook the product based on different levels of its freshness. The playful design comprises a handheld sensor that consists of an aroma detector, and a small mouth-shaped printer that prints out recipes by a zero-waste chef inputted manually and randomised within different freshness bands. In such a way Snoot demonstrates how the food should be prepared in order to extend its life and reduce unnecessary food waste. via dezeen.com

#BeOpenDESIGN On discovering that more than 19,000 children drown annually in Bangladesh, especially during the flooding season, recent design graduate of Northumbria University Ewan Morrell has created a lifejacket designed to be filled with empty plastic bottles. The designer hopes that large fast fashion companies that manufacture in the region would make and distribute the Bot lifejackets on a charitable basis, using their fabric waste. For buoyancy, Morrell made use of another resource that is abundant in the region – plastic waste. Four discarded plastic bottles need to be inserted into the vest to turn it into an effective flotation device for children in flood-prone low-income countries. So far, the designer tested the product in Kenya, England and India. via designforindustry.online

#BeOpenARCH Commissioned to build a residence in a remote relocation along the Pacific coastline near Tunquén, Chile, local architects Umberto Bonomo and Felipe Alarcón have completed a modular house out of cinder blocks that have an advantage of being easy to transport. The project titled Little Big Sur, or LBS, is characterized by two V-shaped walls that create a courtyard, with openings that let some light and air through and serve as climatic devices. Inside, a triangular swimming pool is hidden, while two orthogonal volumes on both sides of the angular walls form the interior living spaces of the home.

#BeOpenARCH Swedish brand of high-performance electric cars Polestar has brought to life KOJA (Swedish for “hut”), a micro treehouse envisioned by Finnish concept designer Kristian Talvitie. First a conceptual competition entry for the first Polestar Design Contest, the tiny dwelling is built among the forests outside the village of Fiskars, Finland. The completed structure is realized in sustainable materials keeping in mind the design language of the automotive brand and provides an immersive nature experience. The treehouse envelops a tree trunk, so as to take support from the tree without harming it. The design features a panoramic glazed façade, which wraps the minimalistic interiors so that occupants are immersed in the lush trees canopies.

#BeOpenDESIGN Blume is a made-to-order planter that developed by Nikki Alagha Design, a product design company based in Montréal, Canada. This special plant holder comes with a trellis that can be linked together with a threaded metal knob, enabling the user to grow their plants in any direction. The wooden trellis can go as high as 30 inches depending on the design, and the bases uses cement, which makes the customizable planter a sustainable product, adding to its minimal aesthetic and emotional value.

#BeOpenDESIGN Evaro by Paul Sun of UK-based practice Gingko Design is not another drab table lamp. The beautiful and innovative item is a stunning anti-gravitational light bulb, which seemingly floats mid-air – and that is not an illusion. The base of the light and holder has powerful magnets that suspend the light and wirelessly transfer power through magnetic induction. Merely moving the bulb close to the holder sets it in place and switches it on. Any accidental knocks simply connect the bulb to its holder, ensuring that it never drops. Available in a choice of walnut and black, this unique, elegant, and sustainable light bulb creates a magical feeling without any fancy gimmicks like colour-changing LEDs, or internet-connected voice-controlled operation.
