International firm NOA (Network of Architecture) defies gravity with a cantilevered wellbeing extension to the Hotel Hubertus in South Tyrol. The iconic concept references reflections in water and plays with the perception of upside-down. The structure is located on the southeast side of the facade, in a position symmetrical to the projecting glass-bottomed pool created by the studio for the Italian resort in 2016. Like the pool, the new wellness area is also detached from the main building: the platform hovers 15 metres above the ground and is supported by two pillars clad in larch logs, similar to those that punctuate the facade behind.

Residential project by Jakarta-based studio K-Thengono draws inspiration from the distinguished Joglo house deeply rooted in Javanese culture. This integration involves blending traditional Joglo house elements with a contemporary elevated cuboid design. The residence is composed of four scattered vernacular entities, characterized by natural elements such as wood and stone, each of which embodies the distinctive Joglo house form. These entities are interconnected through an accessible streamlined glass atrium that appears to float at the center, while the residence’s pitched roof resembles a frustum pyramid volume, historically symbolic of the homeowners’ social and economic status.

The Blocco calculator by Milano-based industrial designers Damiano Marcon and Fabio Verdelli projects calculations onto paper enabling the user to easily read and write without having to shift their focus between the calculator and paper. Beautifully marrying aesthetics with functionality and precision, the product’s ergonomic design caters to both left-handed and right-handed users.

BE OPEN Art is happy to announce that Awshitttttt, a self-taught artist from Bali, Indonesia, has been selected the Regional Artist of the month (September) by the highest number of votes of BE OPEN Art online gallery visitors.
With a passion for drawing and illustration since he was a child, Awshitttttt is now a professional artist focusing on digital painting and large-scale public murals. Portrait paintings, illustrations, and urban art are his artistic fields of expertise. His trademark is incorporating the delicate and iconic daisy flower as a representation of peace, love, and positivity.
Awshitttttt has become the last of the three candidates to the title of the Regional Artist who best represents the artistic tradition of Southeast Asia: Brunei, Cambodia, East Timor, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, and Vietnam.
Very soon, BE OPEN Art expert team will select the one winner who will be awarded the 500 euros prize. Stay tuned!

As its name suggests, the innovative design of the Red Dunes playground by local studio XISUI Design in a residential area in Guangzhou, China, showcases undulating red dunes that create an alluring landscape for children's activities. Built above an underground parking unit, the play area takes cues from natural forms including mountains and caves and comprises a playful arrangement of hills and arches designed for climbing and discovery.

The fourth (and last) stage of the BE OPEN Regional Art competition is now on. Over October-December 2023 we welcome artists from the countries of Central Africa:
Cameroon, Central African Republic, Chad, Congo Republic - Brazzaville, Democratic Republic of Congo, Equatorial Guinea, Gabon, São Tomé & Principe.
Works by 20 emerging artists will be posted at the online gallery every month, and a public vote will select the Regional Artist of the Month. At the end of the stage, BE OPEN expert community team will select the Artist of the Region, who best represents the artistic tradition of Central Africa, out of the monthly winners.
The regional winners get the money prize of EUR500, while a selection of artwork best representing the region form an exhibition, in order to share the art with the wide public and celebrate the artists involved.

BE OPEN Art is happy to announce September 2023 Artist of the Month. Every month we invite art enthusiasts to choose the best artist among those featured in our online gallery. In September, our congratulations go to Wandaalo Atenyi Daniel, Ugandan born artist that uses charcoal on paper to create surrealist monochromatic portraiture. Daniel creates depictions of characters that are a mix of realism and surrealism rooted in African spiritual mythology.
We also take the opportunity to applause all the featured artists and thank everyone who voted!

Local practice PMA Madhushala has used a screen of wavy, perforated brick to wrap it around an unusual rural home in Maval, India. The design philosophy draws inspiration from the regional house form called ‘Gadi’, a small fortress with thick walls secured from outside, with internal courts, balconies, common areas that create an interesting hierarchy of open, semi open and enclosed spaces. The team opted for stone and brick, which are considered to be the perfect choice for designing a fortress. The walls are made up of horizontal bands of brick lace layered upon one another with varied spacing and enhanced with honeycomb-like openings.

Balancing on a concrete pillar above ground level in Veenhuizen, a village in the Netherlands known for its history of craftsmanship, Stable Stack is a temporary one-room hotel by architecture studio Overtreders W. The compact structure is created from borrowed materials and secured by tie-down straps in order to represent the ingenuity of the local craft tradition and the abundance of materials to be found in the local environment. After the hotel is closed in October 2023, all building materials will be returned undamaged to their original owners.

London-based designer Marcus Cresswell has introduced a pizza oven that is made to resemble a disco ball. Aptly named Discoven, the functional oven is clad in 34,000 small mirror units that are fitted by hand and is able to rotate 360° on the base for the mirror to catch light just like a disco ball. The inside features a stone core with a cordierite cooking base that lets the oven hit temperatures of 400°C, allowing it to cook a perfect Neapolitan-style pizza in under 90 seconds.

The USB key is one of the common objects you easily lose. Claire+Léa, design studio based in Paris and Zurich, has conceptualized a USB stick, which boasts an unusual branch-like form and could perfectly rest in between specific laptop keys so that the user never has to worry about losing it. Since the concept design is very thin, it is safe to close the laptop lid on it since it won’t push into and puncture the screen.

Chinese studio Open Architecture has designed a space museum and experience centre in Yantai, China, as "an extraterrestrial-looking object landed mysteriously in the clearing of a seaside park". Named Space Crystals, the building will have a faceted stone-like shape and a glossy black exterior covered by photovoltaic glass to generate enough solar power for the general lighting requirement of the whole building.

Guided by the ambition to celebrate Canada’s cultural diversity, The Leaf is a new botanical sanctuary located in Winnipeg’s Assiniboine Park. The design by Canadian studio KPMB Architects comprises a new public greenhouse that is topped by a spiraling cable-net roof modelled after the Fibonacci sequence, specifically nautilus shells and sunflowers. Glass windows provide expansive views in and out, and welcome locals and international visitors to explore the space and reflect on the beauty and wonder of the natural ecosystem.

Launched in 2012, the Iosonopipo photographic project by Italian photographer Giuseppe Palmisano serves as a visual exploration of the human body, highlighting the female figure as the highest expression of nature. Palmisano’s work has always revolved around redefining the role and portrayal of women. The Iosonopipo project presents staged photography of semi-nude figures shown against ordinary, familiar backdrops infuses everyday life with mystery and humor.

The central Pavilion for Burning Man 2023 was designed by Oakland-based artist Tim Bremner whose incredible proposal won over 10 other artists who had submitted their ideas. In line with this year’s theme for the festival, Animalia, the artist compares the festival’s community to “a beehive of applied creativity,” where everyone has their role and exists in a beautifully designed place just like in a proper bee colony. Therefore, the pedestal he developed for the pedestal took the form of a hive, with interlocking wooden hexagons stacked on top of one another to resemble honeycomb.

Drawing inspiration from patterns and shapes that could be reminiscent of tree leaves or insect wings, local studio Roth Architecture has built an organically shaped building made of concrete and palm fibre for a creative lab in Tulum, Mexico. The bulbous shapes are distributed as independent buildings to adapt to the site in the jungle, which provides a visual impact of dynamism. In some places, the structure is wrapped directly around trees, with trunks exposed to the interior.

Designed by New Zealand artist Mike Hewson, Rocks On Wheels is a regional-scale public art playground in Melbourne. Consisting of more than 300 ton of raw Victorian bluestone boulders resting on seemingly flimsy domestic scale dollies invisibly engineered to support extreme loads, the project has been developed as an inclusive playground that challenges play design norms, exhibits world-class excellence in terms of play value, conceptual rigour and material durability. The flooring is custom-design soft-fall that mimics the distinctive City of Melbourne bluestone paving standard detail.

As part of the Palais Garnier’s renovation, the Opéra National de Paris invited French artist JR to transform the scaffolding on the historic landmark in the heart of the French capital into the entrance of a vast cave that opens to a passage filled with rocks and light. The cave beckons viewers to peer inside, invoking Plato’s allegory of the cave - a place where the exit leads to knowledge and an understanding of the world.
Retour à la caverne continues JR’s trompe l’oeil projects, which have taken over iconic sites such as the Louvre Museum, the Trocadero Esplanade, the Farnese Palace in Rome and the Strozzi Palace in Florence. Each installation is an invitation for viewers to change their perspective.
The installation will be open to the public until from September 25th, 2023.
