TL;DR for original post:
In May, bought a brand new NZXT PC from someone on OfferUp for $650, with around a $1400 value. I had been looking to invest in a PC for some time, especially for gaming and school, and I couldnt pass up on this offer. I sent the listing to some more tech literate friends and they all said it was good, and so I bought it.
Fast forward to 2 weeks ago, everything was working great until I updated Windows and got a pop up saying I need to return the PC due to lack of payment and cooperation. It turned out the seller had sold me a PC he was renting from NZXT and stopped making payments, probably shortly after selling the tower to me.
New stuff:
In my Reddit post, 99% of the comments were telling me to replace the motherboard or flash bios or reinstall windows to remove the lock, but I was hesitant because (and it sounds kind of weirdly egotistical to say) I don't want to just steal the PC, even though I technically bought it to keep. Also, if anyone else with a more lenient moral compass has this happen to them, I don't recommend attempting to remove the lock once you know it's been stolen, since that will only implicate you, and if you're like me and had it on your home WiFi, your IP and/or last known location of the PC is already logged.
I did get one [comment](https://www.reddit.com/r/pcmasterrace/comments/1wmod4m/comment/pb9prhv/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=web3x&utm_name=web3xcss&utm_term=1&utm_content=share_button) from u/Fragile_official (company that specializes in the renting end of things) letting me know about the stuff stated before this, and that if I decide to cooperate with them they'll work to find the best path forward for the both of us. So I decided to go with them, sending over receipts, chats, and any information I can gather about the sale and the seller.
Less than a day after sending them an email with proof, I got an email back explaining that theyll be pursuing the seller and sending me a free PC replacment with the same specs and having me send the stolen one back to them, which was literally one of the best case scenarios for me, next to something like just unlocking the PC I had, though I'm guessing they'd need it since it's evidence, lol. Many of the comments I got on how theyre expecting me to be reimbursed never went above a 10% discount on my next NZXT PC or paying to ship the PC back, but the reality was so so so much better. Plus, the new PC has RGB fans in it, and twice as many fans at that.
TL;DR:
Instead of swapping soft/hardware on the stolen PC, I worked with the company that it was stolen from and came to the conclusion that has me with a new PC and the seller being pursued by the company and law enforcement. a win-win.
if anyone has any questions about the process or my experience id be happy to answer any that i can, but something to keep in mind is it's still technically a work in progress, as I do not know what the fate of the seller is right now and I am awaiting instructions on how exactly to send back the old PC, though I'm positive that one's going to be as simple as receiving a label and dropping it off at FedEx

| 19 | Walking my wife through rebuilding my PC - Literally. I can’t physically do it.
So I was diagnosed with ALS and can no longer really move my hands and arms very freely…. But my home lab needed a massive overhaul. It’s a Linux box (Unraid) with 144TB HDDs, 8TB NVMe, in a big box (Define R5).
I wanted to keep the HDDs (it’s like $5k alone in today’s market), case and SSDs. Replacing the rest. So we had to disassemble the entire thing, clean it out and spruce up the inside of the case. She’s never touched the inside of a computer before so had to walk her through what to remove and what to leave. Had to get all the old PSU wires out. We added another case fan as well. Get the 1080Ti out as I’m going without a GPU for transcoding this time around due to quicksync.
Then had her build out the new mobo (cpu, cooler, paste, ram, SSDs.
That’s where we sit at the end of the evening…. Tomorrow she has to move around the standoff screws, install the mobo, install the PSU, then get all the cables routed and plugged back in.
I can’t talk very well so it was quite the challenge - but she was a damn champ. Just wanted to brag a bit how well she did for someone who’s never really touched a computer other than a keyboard and mouse.
