Those who have neither knowledge nor penance, nor liberty, nor wisdom, nor good conduct, nor virtue, nor the observance of duties, pass their life in this world of mortals like beasts in human form and are only a burden on the planet. This shloka is from Neetishatakam by Bhatrihari. Bottom line:Life is only fruitful and meaningful when one attains knowledge, has good conduct, attains wisdom and fulfils his/her duties. One should hence try to attain these qualities in life. This doha is of Saint Kabir. The swan flew up the unknown skies, free from her gross form. Beakless, she drank water there, forgetting her earthly home. Bottom line:You think you belong to the Earth, and as long as you are the body, you are right in what you think. Yes, the body belongs to the Earth. But that’s not where your thirst would be quenched. Kabir Das is saying, let the body belong to the Earth, you fly up to the sky. That’s where you will drink without the body. There is a water, that is for the body. There is a water that is drank through the beak. And there is a water that is drank without the beak. It is the heavenly water. It is the water of the skies. There is the water of the earth, that can placate at most the body. The body is thirsty, the water of the earth helps. But we are not the body, therefore the water of the earth will not suffice for you. You need some other water. So, let the one who is really thirsty fly over up to the skies and there he shall be really quenched. You will forget about all earthly pleasures and attachments. The body will still remain on the earth, but you will remain with your beloved, and that’s the way of living. Let the body belong to the earth, you stay belonging to your beloved. If an elephant has its foot on the tail of a mouse and you say that you are neutral, the mouse will not appreciate your neutrality. These lines are from the poem Antim Unchai by Kunwar Narayan. Friends who are giving mains examination this year must be filled with varied amounts of anxiety. Don't worry friends, this too shall pass. There are only two possibilities:in or out. However, your results shall not impact this larger cosmos even in the tiniest way.Everything shall go on at its own pace. So,try to calm yourselves.A cool head above the shoulders works well in cricket as well as in exams. Hope this poem and article touches a part of you. Regards Long live India, long live Indians and long live 'Dev Bhasha'.
