| 2 |  Nine outstanding individuals from NUS were honoured at the annual NUS University Awards for their exceptional contributions to the University, Singapore and the global community on 4 September 2026. 🎉
The prestigious Outstanding Service Award was conferred upon Mr Seah Moon Ming, Chairman of the Board of Governors of NUS High School of Mathematics and Science, and Professor Bernard Tan Cheng Yian, NUS Senior Vice Provost (Undergraduate Education).
Seven outstanding academics and researchers were also honoured for their accomplishments: Professor Abhik Roychoudhury, Professor Ashok Venkitaraman, Associate Professor Chen Huijun Cynthia, Assistant Professor Liu Boxiang, Professor Liu Xiaogang, Associate Professor Robin Loon Seong Yun and Associate Professor Tay En Rong Stephen.

| 3 |  Despite being bordered by three countries — Indonesia, Malaysia and Singapore — the Straits of Malacca and Singapore have been a beacon of multilateral cooperation. A new book, The Straits of Malacca and Singapore: A Model for the World, brings together historical, legal, maritime and strategic perspectives from experts at the NUS Centre for International Law and leading maritime scholars.
Launched on 24 August 2026, it builds on the Centre’s longstanding research into ocean law, maritime governance and shipping, offering lessons for policymakers, practitioners and scholars on managing one of the busiest waterways in the world.

At the heart of NUS’ AI strategy is ensuring human capabilities remain at the forefront even as it leverages AI technologies. To ensure all incoming NUS students achieve AI literacy before they start their courses, they will undergo a new AI foundational course, “THE1008 Applied Generative AI: From Prompting to Evaluation”, from AY2026/27.
The goal is to nurture graduates who can harness AI for analysis, problem-solving and creative work, complemented by human-centred skills that employers value most, including critical thinking, judgement and sense-making.

| 6 |  Three distinguished NUS scientists have been recognised at this year’s President’s Science & Technology Awards for their exceptional contributions in pushing the boundaries of science and technology.
Receiving the esteemed President’s Science Award was Professor Wu Jishan from the Faculty of Science. Two outstanding young researchers were also conferred the Young Scientist Award: Assistant Professors Liu Boxiang (Faculty of Science) and Hou Yi (College of Design and Engineering).
Presented annually by the National Research Foundation, the Awards are the nation’s highest honours for research scientists and engineers in Singapore. Congratulations to all the winners! 🎉

| 8 |  The Ministry of Law and NUS will establish a new Centre at the NUS Faculty of Law driving leadership and innovation in arbitration and other forms of international dispute resolution, led by Professor Stavros Brekoulakis from NUS Law.

| 9 |  Global semiconductor leader STMicroelectronics and NUS have officially launched the ST–NUS HELIX Corporate Lab on 24 August 2026, a four-year strategic research initiative focused on advancing the next generation of edge AI technologies.
HELIX, which stands for Hardware for Embodied Low-power Intelligent Xcceleration, focuses on embodied AI, where intelligence is built directly into a physical form (think robots, humanoids or drones) — combining multi-modal sensing, on-device computing and real-time actuation.

| 11 |  For the first time, NUS Career Fest is moving off-campus to the Suntec Singapore Convention & Exhibition Centre (Halls 401 and 402) on 23 September 2026. Themed “Beyond Campus, Into Your Future”, the flagship fair connects students with more than 200 employers over 20 industries.

| 13 |  🔎 How to turn waste into wealth?
Led by Associate Professor Duong Hai Minh from the Department of Mechanical Engineering under NUS College of Design and Engineering, NUS researchers have developed a method to turn waste from the tough, lightweight composites used in aircraft and other high-performance structures into aerogels that could be used for thermal insulation, sound absorption and oil spill clean-up.
The team is exploring collaborations in the aerospace, advanced materials, manufacturing and waste management sectors, as well as scaling up the technology and assessing its environmental and economic performance for industrial use.

| 14 |  Researchers from NUS and the Agency of Science, Technology and Research (A*STAR) have been awarded a research grant of S$22 million to conduct cutting-edge research on greener polymers. Known as the Singapore Platform for Bio-derived Specialty Polymers Research, INnovation and Translation (SG Bio-SPRINT) research programme, the five-year initiative is designed to:
⚛️ Develop alternative sustainable monomers, structurally similar to petrochemicals, for making sustainable, high-performance specialty polymers used in adhesives, specialty coatings and electronics

From staff and faculty to alumni and leaders, they received recognition across 14 out of 24 total award categories. Among the top winners was Mr Sundaresh Menon, who was awarded the Order of Temasek (With Distinction), Singapore’s highest civilian honour. Honoured with the prestigious Meritorious Service Medal were Ms Anita Fam Siu Ping, who chairs the advisory board of the Lien Centre for Palliative Care at the Duke-NUS Medical School, and Professor Chee Yam Cheng, Clinical Professor at the NUS Yong Loo Lin School of Medicine.

| 17 |  Singapore’s 61st birthday bash is over, but its story is still being written — sometimes even rediscovered in a new light. ✨
Long before Raffles arrived in 1819, Singapore was already part of a wider world with centuries of history. This is explored in depth in “700 Years of Visual Arts: Singapore in the World”, a new Generation Education course, which will be available to NUS students and public learners alike from August 2026. Featuring over 700 forms of visual and material culture — ceramics, textiles, artworks and more — it attempts to piece together Singapore’s longer history and heritage beyond the familiar colonial narrative.

Earlier this year, 17 NUS students from the Global Studies Programme at the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences embarked on a 10-day field immersion trip to Ecuador to experience the country's environmental, political, social and cultural landscape through the NUS Study Trips for Engagement and EnRichment (STEER) initiative.
Recalling treks through forests and engaging with local communities, three students reflect on how one journey inspired multiple ways of seeing and understanding the world.

| 19 |  🧬 Researchers from the Cancer Science Institute of Singapore (CSI Singapore) at NUS have uncovered a previously unknown mechanism that helps cancer cells evade detection by the body’s immune system — a discovery that could pave the way for more effective cancer immunotherapies.
Published in Science Immunology, the study identifies the RNA helicase DDX6 as a previously unrecognised ‘hidden switch’ that prevents the immune system from recognising cancer cells. Targeting DDX6 could make tumours more visible to the immune system, improving existing or new immunotherapies.

| 20 |  Five projects led by NUS and Duke-NUS Medical School will study how diseases move between wildlife and domestic animals, the environment and people in Singapore's urban landscape, as part of a national effort to strengthen the country’s long-term public health resilience, including:

🕷️ Mapping tick-borne pathogens across Singapore
🦇 Understanding disease transmission in wildlife, like macaques and bats
🐾 Examining the risk of zoonotic disease transmission between companion animals and humans
🪽 Bird flu surveillance
These projects were awarded grants under NParks’ Biosurveillance Research Programme, a S$15 million initiative under Singapore's Research, Innovation and Enterprise 2025 Plan.
