The narrator does not believe in love as a value. He believes in outcomes: leverage, dominance, emotional debt. When value collapses, what remains? Technique.
That is bad conscience: pain turned inward, not to forge a higher self, but to keep the wound fresh and profitable. He uses self-disgust as a kind of identity. Our age calls this “trauma,” then mistakes explanation for transformation.
The narrator tells on himself, but not to become better. He tells on himself to:
• feel interesting,
• control the narrative,
• preempt judgment (“I condemned myself first, so you cannot hurt me”),
• turn shame into a performance.
We Should not mistake confession for repentance. Modern readers love “honesty” the way they love true crime: as stimulation with moral seasoning.
The reactive man flourishes when relationships become a market and people become profiles. This is not romance; it is logistics.
Our day and age has made this easier. We have built whole platforms for it:
• attention economies,
• status games,
• disposable intimacy,
• endless replacement,
• “talking stages,”
• the gamification of desire.
This is will to power in its sick, reactive form: not self-overcoming, but other.. breaking.
This is will to power in its sick, reactive form: not self-overcoming, but other.. breaking.
The narrator wants power, but not the hard kind… discipline, creation, responsibility, becoming. He wants the cheap kind: the ability to alter another person’s emotional weather. He “wins” by making someone doubt herself.
so we see the title is precise: he doesn’t steal oxygen because he needs to breathe. He steals it because he wants the other to gasp.
In my view: he is driven by resentment . Not the noble resentment of injury that becomes action, but the slavish rancor that becomes strategy . He cannot bear the independence of the other… especially a woman who might see through him.
so he must puncture her confidence to feel tall.
The narrator in the novel is not merely “toxic,” as our age likes to moralize and then move on. He is a reactive man: one who cannot create joy, so he manufactures control; one who cannot sustain greatness, so he hunts “proof” that others are small. He does not love; he test, humiliates, withdraws, returns… like a petty tyrant managing a failing empire.
