A growing number of geopolitical analysts believe the world is entering one of the biggest shifts in global power since the end of the Second World War.
Former British diplomat Alastair Crooke argues that recent events in the Middle East demonstrate the declining ability of the United States to dictate outcomes unilaterally, while simultaneously strengthening the confidence of the BRICS nations, particularly China and Russia.
According to Crooke, if Washington has been unable to force Iran into becoming a compliant regional partner, it becomes increasingly difficult to imagine similar strategies succeeding against far larger powers such as China or Russia.
Crooke believes this will further cement China’s strategic relationship with Iran, securing long-term energy supplies while accelerating Beijing’s economic and infrastructure expansion throughout the Middle East.
He argues that Gulf states are increasingly looking east, expanding partnerships with China and Russia through investment, infrastructure, trade and industrial development rather than relying solely on traditional Western alliances.
“The region will be absorbed into Greater Asia,” Crooke said, arguing that China is becoming one of the central economic powers in an emerging Eurasian order.
Jamie McIntyre: “The Centre of Economic Power Is Moving East”
Australian National View Chief Editor and LUX Property Group founder Jamie McIntyre says the broader trend extends well beyond the Middle East.
“In my view, we are witnessing a historic transition from a largely Western-led international order towards a genuinely multipolar world,” McIntyre said.
“China has become the world’s manufacturing powerhouse. The BRICS nations represent a rapidly growing share of the world’s population, resources, production and economic output. Investors cannot afford to ignore these long-term structural changes.”
McIntyre believes investment flows increasingly follow economic fundamentals rather than geopolitical traditions.
“Capital naturally moves towards growth. Increasingly that growth is occurring throughout Asia and many BRICS economies.”
Indonesia Positioned to Benefit
McIntyre points to Indonesia as one of the countries likely to benefit from these global changes.
With one of the world’s largest populations, abundant natural resources, expanding infrastructure and a strategic location at the centre of Southeast Asia, Indonesia continues attracting increasing international investment.
This was one of the reasons McIntyre relocated from Australia and has focused much of LUX Property Group’s development activity in Indonesia, including projects in Bali and Lombok.
He believes Southeast Asia will become one of the world’s most important regions over the coming decades as trade, tourism and investment continue expanding.
Multipolarity Replacing Unipolarity?
Supporters of the emerging BRICS-led framework argue that a multipolar world encourages greater national sovereignty, diversified trade, infrastructure development and reduced dependence on any single country or reserve currency.
Others caution that the United States and its allies remain highly influential economically, technologically and militarily, and that future global leadership may involve competition and cooperation among multiple major powers rather than the replacement of one dominant bloc by another.
Regardless of differing political perspectives, many economists acknowledge that Asia now accounts for an increasing share of global economic growth, manufacturing output and infrastructure investment.
For businesses and investors, the implications are significant.
