InSIS Webinar Series-2022 Mechanisms of Crack Growth in Quasi-brittle Materials – Micro-cracking to Fracture Speaker: Prof. J. M. Chandra Kishen, Professor, Department of Civil Engineering, IISc, Bengaluru Date: 23-July-2022 Time: 6:00 - 7:30 p.m. IST Link for joining Webinar: https://tinyurl.com/6e3myupj Abstract Fracture in quasi-brittle materials such as concrete is a complex phenomenon due to its inherent heterogeneity giving rise to strain softening response, formation of fracture process zone (FPZ) and size effects. The fracture process involves the formation of micro-cracks, their coalescence into macro-cracks with simultaneous formation of FPZ ahead of the crack tip. The FPZ encases toughening mechanisms that include aggregate bridging, crack branching and deflection around aggregates. The nature of fracture depends on the type of loading. When subjected to monotonically increasing displacement, concrete exhibits extensive post-peak softening. On the other hand, under fatigue loading, a three-phase progressive damage followed by sudden failure is observed. In this webinar, the focus will be on bringing the different fracture mechanisms involved in the formation of the FPZ under monotonic and fatigue loading. The key findings of experimental research through acoustic emission and digital imaging would be presented followed by the prediction of micro-crack evolution using irreversible thermodynamic entropy Bio-data of speaker Prof. J. M. Chandra Kishen is a Professor at the Department of Civil Engineering. He completed his Ph.D. at the University of Colorado, Boulder, USA in the year 1996. He has held visiting faculty positions at the Leipzig University of Applied Sciences in Germany, University of Colorado, USA and the Russian Academy of Sciences in Kazan, Russia. He has received the best teacher award by the University of Colorado, USA. His research interests are in fracture and fatigue mechanics with applications to residual life assessment and health monitoring of damaged structures. He has published about 167 research papers in international journals and conference proceedings. He is an active consultant and has helped the industry solve challenging problems involving rehabilitation of metro girders damaged due to construction faults, large IT infrastructure damaged due to fire accidents, highway viaducts damaged due to loss of pre-stress and others. He is nominated as the Fellow of the International Association of Fracture Mechanics of Concrete and Concrete Structures and currently serves as its President. He is the recipient of the Prof. Satish Dhawan Young Engineer State Award by the Government of Karnataka. Organized by: InSIS and Center for Safety Critical Systems, IITM

Dear Colleagues: Dr Sohom Roy of the Earthquake Engineering Department of IIT Roorkee will be conducting a set of online lectures with the title "Fracture, Friction, and Faults". These lectures are meant for those of you interested in the application of contemporary methods in the mechanics of crack propagation to problems in geomechanics. The course will be held online from 7th July 2022 till 15th July from 5-6 PM. You need to register for the course on the following link https://iitk-ac-in.zoom.us/meeting/register/tJYuc-2prT0oGdBXatOddQF99MJsYsFNOQe- After registering, you will receive a confirmation email containing information about joining the meeting. The broad outline of the course is: Linear elastic fracture mechanics and applications to geosciences, interfacial friction laws, introductory mechanics of geologic faults. with detailed discussions on Mechanics of Magma transport and dykes, friction laws and stability of interfacial sliding, slip in geological faults, earthquake nucleation. All interested are welcome. Please feel free to let others who might be interested know about this event. A bit about Sohom: Sohom is an Assistant Professor in Earthquake Engineering Department at IIT Roorkee. He is interested in applying solid and fracture mechanics, dynamical systems, and applied math to geoscience problems. He did his bachelor's in Physics and later pursued masters in geophysics. Sohom did his Ph.D. at Tufts University, where he worked on frictional sliding instabilities and their relevance to earthquake nucleation. Further, he did postdoctoral research at Dalhousie University, where he worked on fracture mechanics of slow slip. Sohom is also interested in teaching, and recently he conducted courses on Mechanics of Deformable media, Geophysical Field Theory, and Earthquake Engineering at IIT Roorkee.
