This Minoan road stretches for around 31 miles (50 km) and links the ancient city of Knossos with Gortyne and Lebena. What makes this road so extraordinary is its sophisticated construction. It is equipped with side drains to manage water run-off, which has contributed to its preservation for millennia. The platform consists of a 8 inches (20 cm) thick covering of sandstone blocks, solidly assembled and bound with a durable clay and plaster mortar.
