How to Spot Laziness Edward McKendree Bounds Said: 1. “Idle hands are the devil's workshop." 2. "Laziness grows on people; it begins in cobwebs and ends in iron chains." 3. "The lazy man does not, will not, cannot pray, for prayer demands energy." The Bible calls us to be diligent, zealous, and active in our faith. "Do not be slothful in zeal, be fervent in spirit, serve the Lord." Romans 12:11 "Therefore, brothers, be all the more diligent to confirm your calling and election, for if you practice these qualities you will never fall.” 2 Peter 1:10 Laziness is defined as a disinclination to activity or exertion despite being able to act or exert oneself (Merriam-Webster). Laziness is the quality of being unwilling to work or use energy; idleness (Oxford Languages). Laziness refers to not liking to work hard or to be active (Cambridge Dictionary). 5 CHARACTERISTICS OF LAZINESS: 1. Procrastination: The Bible often depicts the lazy person as someone who delays or puts off tasks (Prov. 20:4). 2. Neglect of Duties: Laziness in the Bible is also associated with neglect of responsibilities (Prov. 24:30-34). 3. Love of Sleep: Excessive sleep is frequently mentioned as a trait of the lazy (Prov. 6:9-11). 4. Making Excuses: The lazy person often makes excuses to avoid work (Prov. 22:13). 5. Lack of Initiative: Laziness is characterized by a reluctance to begin work or take the initiative. The sluggard in the Bible is often portrayed as needing constant prompting and lacking self-motivation, leading to unfulfilled potential and dependability issues. 5 CONSEQUENCES OF LAZINESS 1. Poverty: A direct consequence of laziness mentioned in the Bible is poverty (Prov. 10:4). 2. Unfulfilled Needs: The lazy person' needs remain unmet due to their inaction (Prov. 20:4). 3. Ruin and Decay: Laziness leads to the deterioration of one's property and resources (Prov. 24:30-34). 4. Missed Opportunities: The lazy individual misses out on opportunities that require action and decision-making. 5. Public Dishonor: Laziness can lead to a poor reputation and scorn within the community (Prov. 12:24).

Who is a Leviathan? Leviathan means “twisting one,” and appears six times in the Hebrew Bible (Job 3:8, 41:1; Ps 74:14, 104:26; Is 27:1).   Leviathan as a glorious creature: In Job 41:1-34 God talks to Job about Leviathan, a huge sea creature with scales and sharp teeth that can walk on land and breathe fire. Leviathan’s size shows how great God is. In Job 41, he is not a demonic entity, instead, he is a physical creature whose existence glorifies God. Leviathan as an evil force: Psalm 74:14 is about God saving His people from evil enemies. It talks about a spiritual battle because God's temple has been destroyed and there are no prophets left. The Psalm reminds God’s people of past victories over evil, like defeating the monster Leviathan. Isaiah 27:1 describes the "Day of the LORD," when God will defeat the nations that have hurt His people, Israel. Leviathan symbolizes the spiritual forces causing this suffering. Although the ultimate victory over these forces is still to come, Christians don't have to live under oppression. Because the Messiah has arrived, He has given the Church the task of fighting these evil powers. The Church is already overcoming the darkness and preparing for the final triumph and celebration. Pseudepigrapha on Leviathan:  The Book of Enoch, 2 Baruch, and 4 Ezra, texts from the first and second centuries CE, describe Leviathan and Behemoth as massive sea and land monsters, respectively created by God to be consumed by people at a special event associated with the Messiah's arrival. Leviathan in the Bible can be either a real, physical creature that glorifies the Creator God, or it can be a symbol of evil spiritual powers that hurt God’s people.   The Old Testament is clear that on the Day of the LORD, Leviathan will be defeated and become food for God’s people. Leviathan symbolizes pride and can influence those who are prideful. It distorts the truth, disrupts communication, and causes chaos, like shipwrecks. It’s a powerful principality that cannot be challenged alone. Combatting Leviathan requires using God’s Word and practicing humility.
