Methods of Inversion (Levels & Techniques)
Air and Blunt Instrument (Standard):
Blow a gentle stream of air from a 3-in-1 syringe around the cervical margin of the tooth to dry the rubber and tuck/push the edge inward using a flat plastic instrument, cord packer, or probe.
Dental Floss Technique:
Use dental floss (sometimes tied as a ligature) to push and adapt the rubber dam deep into the sulcus, especially useful for deep subgingival margins or Class II/III/V restorations.
Knot Ligatures / Teflon (PTFE) Tape:
For complex or deep subgingival areas (like near the epithelial attachment), floss knots or polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) tape can be wedged to hold the rubber dam firmly in an inverted position

Rubber dam inversion is the technique of turning
the peripheral edge of the rubber dam sheet inward (apically) into the gingival sulcus around the tooth's cervical area
Why Invert the Rubber Dam?
Saliva & Fluid Control: Creates a tight, saliva-, blood-, and gingival crevicular fluid (GCF)-proof seal around the tooth.
Dry Field: Prevents contamination during bonding, composite restorations, or endodontic procedures.
Soft Tissue Protection: Keeps etchants, adhesives, and air-abrasion particles away from the periodontal tissues | 335 |
