Each person is obliged to follow the guidance of the Messenger of Allaah (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) and his Companions. This is the way of Ahl al-Sunnah wa’l-Jamaa’ah and the followers of the righteous predecessors (al-salaf al-saalih).

The Messenger of Allāh ﷺ: “Among the happiness of the son of Adam is to be satisfied with what Allāh has decreed for him. Among the misery of the son of Adam is to abandon asking Allāh for guidance, and among the misery of the son of Adam is displeasure with what Allāh has decreed for him.” [Sunan al-Tirmidhi: 2151] Grade: Sahih

Advice for a Young Man at the Beginning of His Journey of Steadfastness Shaykh Muhammad ibn Salih al-Uthaymeen, may Allah have mercy upon him, was asked: What advice would you give to a young man who is at the beginning of his journey of steadfastness upon Islam? He replied: Our advice to this young man, who is upon a sound path, إن شاء الله is: First: That he constantly asks Allah for steadfastness and correctness. Second: That he frequently recites the Qur’an with reflection and contemplation, for this Qur’an has a tremendous effect upon the heart when a person reads it thoughtfully. Third: That he strives to remain constant in acts of obedience and does not become weary or lazy, for the Prophet ﷺ sought refuge from incapacity and laziness. Fourth: That he is keen to accompany righteous people and keeps away from the company of evil people. Fifth: That he advises and encourages himself whenever his soul begins to affect him and says, “The distance is long, and the path is difficult.” Let him counsel himself and remain firm, for Paradise is surrounded by hardships, while the Fire is surrounded by desires and temptations. Sixth: That he distances himself from bad companions, even if they were his friends in the past, because evil companions have an effect upon a person. For this reason, the Prophet ﷺ said: “The example of a bad companion is like the blacksmith’s bellows: either he will burn your clothes, or you will find from him an offensive smell.” 📚Liqāʾ al-Bāb al-Maftūḥ (70/33).

On the authority of ʿAbdullāh ibn ʿAbbās, may Allah be pleased with them both, that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: “There is no believing servant except that he has a sin which he falls into from time to time, or a sin that he persists upon and does not part from until he departs this world. Indeed, the believer was created prone to trial, ever-repenting, and forgetful. When he is reminded, he remembers.” 📚Ṣaḥīḥ al-Jāmiʿ, no. 5735.

Sheikh al Islam Muhammad ibn Abd al Wahhab, may Allah have mercy on him, said: Fasting in month of Muharram is Sunnah and the best of its days are the 9th and 10th. As for everything mentioned about acts of worship on the day of Ashura besides fasting, they have no basis and are indeed innovations. Adaab al Mashi ila as Salah, 52

Ibn Taymiyyah رحمه الله:
When the heart tastes the sweetness of worshipping Allah & being sincere to Him, there is nothing at all that is sweeter, more delightful, more enjoyable, or more pleasant to it than that. [Al-Ubudiyyah, pg. 90]

On the authority of ʿĀʾishah, the Mother of the Believers, may Allah be pleased with her, she said: The Quraysh used to fast on the Day of ʿĀshūrāʾ during the pre-Islamic period of ignorance, and the Messenger of Allah ﷺ used to fast it as well. Then, when he migrated to Madinah, he fasted it and commanded that it be fasted. However, when the month of Ramadan was made obligatory, he said: “Whoever wishes may fast it, and whoever wishes may leave it.” 📚Sahih Muslim, no. 1125.

Consequences of Committing Sins Imaam Ibn Qayyim al Jawziyyah said: ❝Lack of success, invalid views, absence of righteousness, corruption of the heart, failing to praise Allah, wasting time, avoidance of other creations, separation between the servant and his Lord, supplications not being answered, constriction of the heart, decaying of blessings in subsistence and age, prevention of attaining knowledge, humiliation, insults from enemies, a constricted breast, evil friends that will spoil one's heart and waste time, sadness and grief, a miserable life, and disappointment. All that results from sins and neglecting to praise Allah, as plants grow by being watered but are consumed by fire. The opposite of the above are the consequences of obedience to Allah❞ ▪Al Fawaaid (Eng trans pg.57)

Al-Fuḍayl ibn ʿIyāḍ (رحمه الله) said: « التواضع أن تخضع للحق وتنقاد له، ولو سمعته من صبي قبلته منه، ولو سمعته من أجهل الناس قبلته منه » “Humility is to submit to the truth and accept it, even if you hear it from a child; and even if you hear it from the most ignorant of people, you still accept it from them.” Al-Tawāḍuʿ wa al-Khumūl (p. 118)
